A traditional 80/- Specially brewed to mark 25 Years of Brewing at Broughton Ales. Typical of classic Scottish 80/- ales, Exciseman’s 80/- is dark and slightly sweet. Full drinking with a good hop aftertaste. Just the sort of ale Burns would have savoured during his time as an officer of the Excise.

Major ingredients are:
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Black Malt, Crystal Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and first Gold.

500ml bottle: BBD Apr 2013. Poured into two half-pint glasses on 2013’s New Years Eve @ home. Dark brown with a red hue: on top a biege foam, looked fine. Caramel malty nose and taste, some fruitiness in there too. inbetween the sweetness there is a hop presence that just sits nicely preventing the brew to be just a sweet malty tasting sickly beer. Easy drinking with a good body feel to it: leaning towards rich and creamy but not quite getting there. This was an ideal start to our ’Drinking around Europe’ New Years Eve.

A slightly hoppy nose but in the mouth more of a malty beer. Smooth, not bitter. Drinkable.

500ml bottle from a Wine Rack store in St Andrews. Shining mahogany body with a beige head, slowly diminishing. Dark fruity smell. Hop resin in flavour developing to a growing taste of sweet, dark malts with a chocolate touch. More sweet, than bitter in the aftertaste [01.11.2008].

500ml bottle from Threshers. Poured copper with a thick cream head; the aroma is rich and malty and slightly spicy; malty but disappointingly watery in the mouth with a short bitter burst and a biscuity finish.
