Ever since the Viking era, the Christmas beer tradition has been strong in Norway. As stated in the 'Gulatingsloven' (a regional law text valid until 1274), every farmer was bound by the law to brew beer for Christmas and christen it according to the new faith, otherwise running the risk of losing his assets to the king and bishop. The Christmas beer was normally brewed from the best grain of the season and would be strong with a rich malt flavour. Ringnes Juleøl Sterk (Christmas Strong Beer) is a modern version of the traditional Norwegian Christmas beer of higher alcohol content.
With a deep mahogany colour, Ringnes Juleøl Sterk has a rich malty aroma marked by dry caramel, toffee, chocolate, dried dark berries and nuts. The taste is rich with and full-bodied with a low, but smooth bitterness.

33cl can from KnutAlbert, thanks very much Knut. Reddy orange colour with pink head. Some mid red berry fruit on aroma. Hey, it’s not bad. A kind of fruity strong lager beer. Neat. Just a little bit of puke in the aroma, but fine and drinkable.

330ml bottle. Nice amber body with a rather small beige head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel with traces of dry fruit and hops. Flavor is in accordance with aroma, dominated by slightly roasted caramel malt and hints of dry fruit and hops. Quite OK actually but not very exiting. Sampled every year between 1994 and 2006, I have a feeling this vintage (2006) is not the best.

Red brown body with brilliant clarity and a brownish foam. Dark fruity aroma. Dark plummy flavour with roastiness. Full bodied and traditional xmas feeling. Perhaps best enjoyed alone and not with food (Sampled at a Juløl testing party in Tromsø, 08.12.2006).

Big light brown shiny head over dark red body. Faint, bready, buttery aroma. Sweet roasty caramel taste with alcoholic, buttery notes. Somewhat watery. Bitter aftertaste. Not easy to say why, but I didn’t enjoy this too much. It has a bit of taste, but it’s somewhat unbalanced, and a bit too bitter. Could also do without the butter. (0.33l bottle.)
