This August we’ve been baking up something special with friends at Toast Ale and the National Bakery School, part of London Southbank University.

We took surplus bread from the NBS, got together with the brewing-with-bread experts at Toast and came up with a fun and fruity beer! Part pale ale, part Hefeweizen.

In addition to the surplus bread, we took an English malt base and added a German Weissbier yeast to produce fruity esters reminiscent of banana bread. We complimented this continental touch with some fruity German hop varieties!

Not only does brewing with surplus bread help raise awareness for food waste issues, but for every pint sold a portion of proceeds will be donated to local food waste charity Pecan, part of the Southwark Foodbank!

Grab yourself a taste at the launch party at the Rake on 10th September, or very soon at Hide Bar in Bermondsey, German Kraft for their Oktoberfest celebrations and at Seven Dials Kerb Food Market as well as many other fine establishments. Not to mention down at Orbit Local in SE17!

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Clapton Craft. Pours hazy gold with a big, foamy white head that settles into a creamy topping. The weissbier yeast lends a nice banana impression to the overall character. There's pleasant bready notes, mild bitter lemon rind, wheat flakes, biscuits. Light bodied with active, massaging carbonation. Pretty well balanced in the finish, some dried banana, mellow phenolics, yeast, straw. Not bad.
