Bottle from Waitrose, Stevenage. Golden with next to no head. Strong enough, although its local flavouring gives it s strawberry-like aroma and taste, and the ale has an associated sweetness throughout its character. Fairly active in the palate.

330ml bottle from the brewery online shop. Pours clear gold, thick white head. Floral and citrus hop aromas, light sweetness. Get a touch of fennel/anise, but if I wasn’t looking for it, not sure I’d have spotted it. Good bitter taste, and a more grassy herbal bitterness. Different, enjoyed this.

Given to me, along with a load of other interesting beers for doing a Christian Fellowship quiz night. I’ll offer again if they pay this sort of wage! Brown 330ml bottle, best before 29th June 2009, drank 6th March 2008. Poured into a Corsendonk stemmed Tulip glass. Because it is bottle conditioned I poured it very slowly and carefully. I was rewarded with a lovely looking, clear, Old Gold coloured beer with a large, snow white head. Plenty of bubbles rising upwards to the head indicated a lot of carbonisation. I think this is the first time I have given a 5 for appearance (in almost 400 beers reviewed). The bottle claims Wild Fennel has been used to flavour the beer, I couldn’t detect any in the aroma, only yeast esters and some barley and wheat notes. Tangy and sharp taste, again no hint of fennel for me, more of a ginger style heat bite to it. There is a warmth to the beer that’s for sure. 3 Months of maturing has added something to the beer, it has Duvel type feel to it. The warmth stays and so does the tartness of the intial taste. The 6.8% rests easy within the beer too, making it a very pleasant drink in deed. I liked this a lot, a very good beer and very un-English in its style.

A hazed orange amber with a thin white head. In aroma, strange fruity esters with metallic notes. In mouth, a sweet maderized malt with light treacle, musty, lingering hops, some roasted coffee in finish. Not bad.

Bottle from the shop at Driftwood Spars. Pours amber gold with a fizzy white head. Aroma is a pleasant fruit/herb combination. Flavor is fruity with a light touch of anise. It’s bitter, and the anise tends to displace the fruit after awhile. Interesting.

From a 330ml bottle 24/1/2011. Smells of fruit, yeast, spices and fennel. Tastes alot like it smells - fruity (apricots) and spicy, with some alcohol, more fennel, and a distinct Belgian yeast flavour. Quite sweet, with soft carbonation. An interesting and enjoyable beer.

Bottle from Selfridges Oxford street. Pours clear with a shortlasting white head that leaves no lacing. Aroma of UK hops and marmelade. Sweet malty taste and sticky mouthfeel.
