Our flagship beer - the one Rob brewed first and still the beer we brew most of. Scapa Special is a classic pale ale with wide appeal. Ever so balanced, the skill that Rob has so well honed, this beer and biscuity malt upfront and delicate but ascending hops in the middle and end. Three malts and five hops - from Britain, Germany and the US - make Scapa Special a classic pale ale.

A dark yellow beer, a head is quite small and blond. Aroma has wood, toffee and some lemon. Taste has sweet and caramelly maltyness, fruit cake, some drying bitterness. Medium bodied, balanced carbonation. Fresh and good bitter.

Light bitter, citrus aroma. Not a huge amount of taste. Bit of fruity hop. Watery though. Meh.

Half-pint, cask, hand pulled at The Shore - Kirkwall. A deep golden body with a tiny white head blanketing the upper part of the glass. Mild aroma of herbal hops, peach and pale malts. Mixed taste of peach, herbs and mid-sweet grainy malts. Rounded bittersweet end. Clean on the swallow. Pretty decent and refreshing after the flight to the Orkney Islands (13.04.2016).

Cask at the Liberty Bounds, JDW - London. Pours clear gold with a slight, creamy white head. The nose holds sugary malts, pale grains, ripe lemon. Light-medium sweet flavor with some herbal tea, lemon peel, damp grains. Light bodied with fine carbonation; decent condition. Finishes sweet with slight piney bitterness, some bitter citrus rind, too, more lemony notes, pale grains. A very basic golden bitter.

6th March 2015, 500ml bottle: BBE Aug 2015. Poured into a UK pint sleeve at home during a Scottish beer tasting session with myself. Clear golden body, full white blanket of foam on top. Malty lead to the fruity aroma, the taste follows the same lines. Semi-sweet maltiness with a mixed fruit backbone, very little bitterness throughout. Hoped for more to be honest, nothing wrong with my bottle, it just seemed ’middle of the road’ in all aspects with the flavours not pronounced enough in any direction.
