Imperial Brown Ale

This bold, brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of chocolate malt for its deep color, and aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced brown ale to a decadent level.

Draught @ Waterfront Ale House. Clear dark brown with a reddish tint, small foamy beige head, sharp coffee beans aroma, medium carbonation, medium bitter roasted malt taste with coffee beans flavor, thick, smooth body, long smooth coffee finish. Very smooth and flavorful.

Bottle provided by Founders for review. The first pour, into a suitable goblet, is a deep dark coffee brown, with a foamy head this side of tan colored. The smell is almost saccharine, but thankfully not too strong, lending a big note of mocha java. Just a bit of roasty malt behind it. The taste loses the sweet from the nose, trading in for a warm, alcoholic strong beer taste. There is definitely a blonde roast coffee taste, which goes to one part of my head while the alcohol goes to another. Part of that might be due to the hot weather I’ve been not enjoying. I detect very little hop bitterness, unless that’s what I’m sensing at the malt roast. Either way, there’s clearly something keeping the sweetness and alcohol from swarming my senses. However, there is a slightly sugary cola flourish at the end. Another strong, dark beer from Founders that works best as dessert. It would be worth getting a couple of bottles for cellaring and tasting at intervals.

12 ounce bottle. Translucent cola brown color. Moderate frothy tan head. Intense roasted malt nose is flush with Sumatran dark roast coffee. Bold roasted malt flavor is redolent of coffee and cocoa beans. Smooth and creamy with slightly roasty, earthy, nutty malt goodness. A subtle alcohol kiss finishes this ale nicely.

Oh my, what a coffee beer. Giant java nose, roasty and deep, and the pour’s a nice dark brown with a slight beige head but ample lace. Initially sweet, with a thick brown ale maltiness giving up massive caramel and chocolate, yet the coffee brings up the rear, deep and black, balancing out the sweeter notes. Finishes with a piney bitterness, strong and resinous, accenting the espresso undertone. Silky smooth feel. Delicious.
