Bottle shared at the Tropical Croydonia tasting. 01/07/2015. Many thanks to Paul. Aroma shows some age, mint choc chic, nutty, little booze. Caramel brown coloured pour with a athin off white head. Flavour is composed of nutty, mint, choc, some age. Pappery, little woody alcohol. Palate is moderate carbonation, bit thin, watery. Impressive for the age,

Bottle split at the Tropical Croydonia tasting on melt day, thanks to Paulo for this .rar Traq, 01/07/15. Chestnut brown with moderate beige spotting. Nose is nutty, spice, toffee, almonds, cake mix. Taste comprises fruit cake, light oxidisation has kicked in but no real detriment, toffee, wood must, dates, trace of liqourice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough old.

Tropical Croydonia Bottle Share. Thanks to Paul for this old treasure. Almost clear amber beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Palate is light and the carbonation pretty low. Caramel and paper oxidised malts. Very mild bitterness on the back end. Trace of ripe - bruised fruit. Light finish. Turning no cartwheels here but it’s always fun to try these old beers and this one is still drinkable.

Bottle via trade. Unknown age...It pours ruby-brown with a small bubbly beige head. The nose is soft, woody, lightly oxidized, leather, dark fruits, raisin, sultana, fruit cake, mild vanilla, cocoa, umami and stollen. The taste is smooth, bitter-sweet, wood, jammy fruit, plum, berry skin, must, leather, toasty, mild charred stuff and light spice with a dry, woody finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Smooth, decent depth and fun to try.

Bottle shared at Scopey’s - many thanks to Paul. Pours clear russet with a frothy, light tan head. A bit of oxidation suggested by the nose, notes of toffee, bread, cola. Medium sweet flavor with lots of old toffee, bruised banana, dates and figs. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with more toffee, caramel, figs, brown bread. Pretty drinkable stuff. Nice aged character.

11.2oz bottle picked up in Columbus, OH. Deep, opaque brown, approaching black. Thin, uneven, soapy beige head...steady rolling and lacy. Nutty and sweet, with some vinous grape and licorice notes. Certainly a decent Scottish Ale, but doesn’t quite live up to the greatness of the other Traquair beers I’ve had. Medium bodied, pretty straightforward in body and mouthfeel. Clean despite the interesting fruity tones, very easy to session, Really begins to grow on you as it breaths. Has a lot of mellow dark fruit flavors, without the boozy sweetness of say, a Belgian Ale. Pretty enjoyable beer, Minimal faint, delicate hop balance up front that quickly fades away. This would be a great beer to really get to know, but the cost is a bit prohibitive.

Bottle, York Beer and Wine Shop. Dense red tinged brown pour with minimal head action. A rather sickly sweet affair with pronounced herbal and dark fruit. notes .Probably the least enjoyable offering from this mob.

Bottle from Phoenix fine Drinks, Gloucester. Dark copper in colour, with a decent, off-white head and slight carbonation. Aroma of caramel, liquorice and a touch of roasted malts. Full mouth feel, with flavours of doughy malts, chocolate and earthy spices. The finish was dry with plenty of liquorice in the after taste. Very enjoyable.

Bottle, from trade with faroeviking. A dark brown, clear beer with a fingerthick beige head. Dried fruits and oxidation on the nose. Also a touch of licorice, some roasted malt and maybe some peat. Full-bodied with some carbonation. Cocoa, dried fruits, roasted malt, some salty licorice and oxidation in the flavor. Quite complex, and the oxidation is just pleasant. Somehow it feels sugary in the mouth, but it’s more on the dry side. Some sourness detected too. The finish has a good load of cocoa, salty licorice and roasted malt. As it warms up, more layers of aroma and flavor shows up, revealing coffee, a mild bitterness, a touch of alcohol and some vinous qualities. The bottle I had was 16 months past BB-date, but was still delicious. Really a lairds liquor. (080925)
