Otter Ale is where it all started. A premium ale must have full flavour and a fair strength without compromise. These two characteristics must be so cleverly balanced, that when the glass is returned to the table after that first slurp, a sigh of appreciation should be heard around the bar.

Imagine a piece of beautifully polished mahogany and you’ve got the deep, rich tones of Otter Ale. The malty aroma and hints of fruit provide a first clue to the flavour but the taste goes further and finishes in a strong combination of fruit and some bitterness.

Relaxing with an Otter is a pastime enjoyed by Devonians and visitors alike. Now it's in bottles, Otter Ale can also be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. It's a real fireside beer that blends some of Devon's best Maris Otter Malt, English Fuggles and Challenger hops and is then lovingly brewed with our very own water from the head springs of the River Otter - the perfect taste of Devon.

A classic award-winning ale, Relax with an otter

Bottle from Morrisons. Pours a clear deep copper colour with a medium sized throthy off-white head. Aromas of toffee, caramel, biscuits and toasty bread. Taste has the same notes again with some dark fruits and a touch of peppery spice. A subtle earthy hop on the finish. Beautifully balanced. Medium body with a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice flavourful ale. Re-tasting: 06/01/23 Taste has lots of toffee and caramel with toasty bread. Malty with subtle earthy hop on the finish.

A typical best bitter, but with a rather fantastic taste of digestive biscuits on the first sip. It didn't come back, but it left a smile on my face and I really enjoyed it.

Pint at Ladram Bay holiday park, Budleigh Salterton. Clear amber brown and small white head. Aroma of toffee malts, bread. Low carbonation and medium body. Malt caramel with a little spicy note. Unremarkable at first but it's one of those English ales that grows on you, it has a certain moreish sessionable quality.

I had this in a countryside pub back in 2008. Memory is a little hazy, but this was one of my two favorites of the trip. Nice malt and earthy hops.
