Otter Ale is where it all started. A premium ale must have full flavour and a fair strength without compromise. These two characteristics must be so cleverly balanced, that when the glass is returned to the table after that first slurp, a sigh of appreciation should be heard around the bar.

Imagine a piece of beautifully polished mahogany and you’ve got the deep, rich tones of Otter Ale. The malty aroma and hints of fruit provide a first clue to the flavour but the taste goes further and finishes in a strong combination of fruit and some bitterness.

Relaxing with an Otter is a pastime enjoyed by Devonians and visitors alike. Now it's in bottles, Otter Ale can also be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. It's a real fireside beer that blends some of Devon's best Maris Otter Malt, English Fuggles and Challenger hops and is then lovingly brewed with our very own water from the head springs of the River Otter - the perfect taste of Devon.

A classic award-winning ale, Relax with an otter

Cask handpull at County Hotel, Ashford. OK, not bad condition, some sweetish malt, some hop, but ultimately pretty forgettable.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. Dark amber. Fruity nose with cherry and butter. Sweet with rounded mouthfeel and medium body. Well balanced with notes of dried fruit and ash. Good late bitterness. A good drinkable full sized bitter.

Cask at the William Morris (JDW), Hammersmith. Deep gold with a cream head; autumnal aromas, apple and malt; smooth and tasty, apple then deeply bitter with earthy malts; leading to some fruity sweetness and then a dry finish.

Light ruby in its colour with a sweet caramel malt aroma, and a tasty fruity maltyness in flavour.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm, 1 March 2007) Amber colour with frothy off-white head. Malty, slightly fruity nose with notes of dried apricots and dusty hops. Slightly closed. Fruity taste with apricots, orange and a lovely, hoppy finish with earthy hops, grapefruit and orange peel. Grows on you, slightly closed aroma, nice taste and mouthfeel with a great hoppy finish earning it some extra points. Great session bitter.

Cask at the Ship Inn, Langton Matravers. Dorset 20-06-06. A mid brown beer, that has a good bitterness some fruitiness once you probe away at it a bit. but on the whole just a fairly ordinary but decent enough bitter. Cask again at the Harbour Inn Lyme Regis, Dorset 15-11-06 better than I remembered 3.2 this time.

(On tap) Slightly hazy dark amber with the tiniest, rough, off-white head. Lightly nutty aroma. Floral flavours, some caramel atop a somewhat thinnish body. Discreet hoppiness in the finish. Very pleasant and easy drinking. 160406
