During the early days of exports of beer from England, one of the main destinations for the sailing vessels would have been the Hanseatic ports of the Baltic and North Sea. These beers were exported in large quantities and would have sat in wooden barrels for months at a time. Eventually the recipients found ways of reproducing using their own methods. This beer is our modern interpretation of the type of porter drank in the Baltic during the 18th and 19th Centuries. It is dark, dry, and leathery with a hint of hedgerow fruit and slight wood from barrel aging.

330ml bottle. Quasi black colour - no head; just a ring of macropore brown bubbles at the bezel. Vinous fruity, mildly tangy, and chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of dark chocolate, blue grapes, morello, some liquorice and leather. Taste is dry, vinous fruity, spicy, woody, slightly chocolately dark malty with subtle sweetness, notes of blue grapes, red wine, some morello, dark chocolate, liquorice, a peppery spicy yeasty touch, a tannic oaky touch as well. Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, slightly cloying palate, soft to flat carbonation. Nicely wild and dirty in the nose, less complex and balanced in taste - pretty good overall.

2/3/2019. Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds. Pours very dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of wood, leather, liquorice, chocolate, light spice and cherry cough drops. Moderate sweetness, medium plus bitterness and a hint of sour. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft combination. Had a medicinal finish and became a little watery, other than that enjoyed it.

Bottle shared at Cotteridge Convention 2017 - cheers all! Pours clear red-brown with a bubbly tan head. The nose is funky, with notes of poo. Light sweet flavour, more funk, wood, dried berries, earth. Medium bodied, oily, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more aged berries and toasted brown bread. Very so so.

Taste: moderate sweet, light bitter, roasted malts, earthy, chocolate, vinous, wood, hint of balsamic. Medium bodied, little carb, semi dry close. LEP beers will undoubtedly divide opinions, I enjoyed this one

Bottle split at Cotts Convention III, thanks to Danny and Fergus, 20/05/17. Light black with a decent tan cap that dissipates fairly quickly. Nose is chocolate, light funk, dark fruit shreds, puff of smoke, spice. Taste comprises toffee, bitter chocolate, funk, dry rot, earthy, a touch harsh in places. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, drying close. Ok porter but lacks depth for the ABV and perhaps a touch unbalanced ... felt a bit let down by this brewer again!

Cotteridge #3: 20th May 2017. Couple of 330ml bottles of this floating about, cheers whoever brought them. Lightly tanned head on a black body. Dark fruits in the aroma, off-sour dark fruits actually. Taste is more of the same with a roasted malty overtone, sweet and sour almost flavour wise. Different and interesting.
