Our annual prototype challenge sees us brew a series of new beers, and allows the public to choose which should feature alongside our headliner range.
Previously featuring future favourites like Jack Hammer, Cocoa Psycho, Dead Pony Club and Vagabond Pale Ale, the prototypes can become superstar brews almost overnight.
Hopped-up Brown Ale takes a pedestrian style and kicks it into overdrive.
Malts: Extra Pale, Munich, Brown, Crystal, Carafa & Flaked Oats.
Hops: Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial & Citra

On bottle att BrewDog Brussels. Clear ruby colour. Lasting thin white head. Its very dry brown malt flavour. Not many bd beers I can remember not liking. And this is another good solid beer. Good strong distinctive malt with a very hoppy finish. Good brown ale or a modern version of it. Dry finish. Almost parching. Cool.

Draught @ Brewdog Helsinki. Pours dark brown with a small head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, hints of citrus, coffee and pine. Taste is dry, roasty and slightly grassy with hints of licorice, coffee, pine and citrus. Finish is dry, slightly hoppy and roasty with loads of licorice root, some coffee, cocoa and grass. Okay, a bit harsh though.

Tap@ Brewdog Helsinki. Mahogany brownish color with a thin white head. Licorice, grapefruit, some passion fruit. Awesome aroma. Licorice root, tropical fruits, very hoppy bitter indeed. I like brown ales and this hopped up version is quite a treat as well. Complex, nice licorice notes.

Draft @ Brewdog Brussels.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at BottleDog London. Pours clear amber-ruby-brown with a creamy tan head. Nice aroma, with ample lightly toasted pine, grainy bread, citrus peel. Light sweet flavor with aggressive bitterness, earth, a mild off note of damp carpet or something. Lots of oily pine, grass, ash, dirt. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Resinous on the finish with lots of harsh bitterness, notes of burnt grass, pine, moist earth, old leathery berries, husky grains. Smells good, but the balance is way off, and there are some odd characteristics in here.

Very good, dense, cream head over mahogany coloured beer. Soy sauce, dry resiny hops in the nose. Sweet, old cookies, oxydized malts; hops arriving with some dry bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied, mild carbonation, woody aftertaste; mild bitterish. Exactly what brown ale needs: a kick in the b*tt.

330ml bottle from the Brewdog online shop. Pours clear mahogany brown with a thin off-white head. Aromas of nuts and resin. Taste is cheery, woody, oily bitterness. More nutty vibes. Bitter chewy finish. Bit MOR.

Keg at Brewdog Shep’s bush. Nice clear amber / chestnut brown coloured pour with a lasting cream coloured head. Aroma is spicy hop with hints of dank, toasted nutty malts with background dried fruit and orange peel. Flavour is composed of toasted grains and malt loaf, raisin with spices and slight earthy citrus hop. Palate us soft, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy, moderate carbonation. Lingering smoked hop, some burnt toast.
