We’ve had the good fortunate to get to know Todd and the team at Good Word over the last four years and have been visiting their wonderful brewery and pub in Duluth, GA (at least) annually since - most recently for their Little Beer festival, as special a beer event as you’ll find in the country. Between Todd’s impeccable lager sensibilities and relentless quest for knowledge we knew we had a great partner in taking on the challenge of a Maibock.
A strong, spring lager often served at German May Day Celebrations (“Mai meaning May) Maibock rides a fine line between intensity and drinkability. Maltiness marked by honey sweetness is balanced by a bouquet of hop character – in this case, driven by staggered additions of German Hallertau Mittelfrüh (whole cone and pellets). Together we employed many of the tools in our lager tool chest. Our Maibock was single-decocted with a combination of two heirloom barley varieties Weyermann Isaria 1924 and @valleymalt Jalowetz Pilsner malt. It was spunded (if you know Good Word, you know), lagered for 9 weeks and krausened with fresh Helles to naturally achieve our target carbonation. We find the results well worth the effort - the beer is refined and technically beautiful. We hope you enjoy it over the next month as much as we know we will.

Can pour at the "No styles alike tasting" from trade with ClarkVV--thanks, Clark! Clear, golden yellow with trace sparkle, ring of head, trace lacing. Aroma is honey malts, mild hops. Taste is strong bready malt, mild honey. Smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Well made and nuanced but kind of a boring style.

16 oz can shared by tfontana. Thanks Tom. The aroma is mild yeast and white bread. Flavor follows with a very soft top background. The beer is balanced for sure. Although it’s extremely simplistic. Such is the style.

Brewery draught, 4/24/25.
Clear, bright copper-amber. Small, but well-retained, butter head.
Spicy hop with fresh cut grass and a healthy malt character adding sourdough and cracker. Surprisingly low perceived sweetness. Clean. Floral hop character lingering.
Rich in flavor despite the not so malty nose. But drying out firmly on the finish alongside spicy hop and earthy mineral. Bread, honey, dusty, grassy, spicy hop. I like how interesting the hop is but it sort of distracts from the malt? Oh well, first world problems. Guess I'll let a can age for a bit.
