Loaded with classic American hops, imparting tangerine and grapefruit flavours over a caramel malt body.
Widely used in brewing during the Middle Ages and finding favour again in modern beer styles, rye adds a dry spicy character to this delicious ruby ale.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a clear reddish amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is grainy, fruity, woody metallic hop. The flavour is moderate sweet light bitter with a dry crisp fresh citrus, light spicy palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Kris Wines. Pours an inviting copper-gold with a frothy, off-white head. Rich toasted caramel and gooey pine in the aroma, some earth, bread. Medium sweet flavour with rich, toasted wholegrain bread, touches of spicy rye, orange peel, pithy grapefruit, oily and bitter pine. Medium to full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Resinous on the finish, with a very satisfying piney and earthy bitterness. Other notes of graham crackers, well toasted wholegrain bread, dried caramel, burnt grains. This is great stuff, a real textbook example of the style. Well done.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - cheers to Señor Scopey. Pours hazy amber with a creamy tan head. Nose has juicy citrus fruits, a bit of pine, grapefruit, melon. Medium sweet flavor with rich pine, toasty bread, dirt, dry caramel. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish with tons of dirty pine, dry brown bread, ripe orange, lightly tangy grapefruit, rich earth. Good beer.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Clear amber body with a thin off-white head. Low carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of caramel, passionfruit, musty white pepper and pumpkin. Flavour of peppery spice, marmalade, earth and boozy peach. Medium body with an oily texture. Light fizz. Doesn’t quite come together, in my opinion. Far from easy drinking.

Keg at the Southern. Pours amber with a big, bubbly off-white head. Big spice and citrus aroma. Lots more spice on the taste. Freezing cold mind. Prickly carbonation. Decent.

Cask (Free Trade Inn, Newcastle) - It says that it’s 6% on the pump clip. Copper red with a slight haze. Toffee, rye and a hint of spice in the aroma. Fruity and fairly bitter taste with notes of grapefruit, caramel and rye detected.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks Paul. Hazy amber beer with a good cream - tan head. Palate is light and smooth and a little dry. Light smooth creamy malt with a toffee streak. Nice marmalade hops with a little orange. Light rye spice. Peel bitter linger.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s. It pours hazy red-amber with a medium light tan head. The nose is earth, pine, light spice, juicy fruit, caramel, toast and resin. The taste is bitter, earthy, resinous, toast, pine, alcohol warmth, brown bread and some astringency with a very dry bitter finish. Medium+ body and moderate-high carbonation. Good deal of bitterness. Another rather good beer from Allendale.
