Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading. Brown-black with a small cream head. Chocolate and cola to the fore with a piney bitterness behind. Quite a creamy mouthfeel. Nice malts; the hops are a bit one-dimensional, but overall it’s decent enough.

Mixed aroma with lightly toasty malts and a touch of green, piney hop. Has a generic dry bitterness but lacks depth and is a bit thin.

Cask at the Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford. Somewhere between actual black and cola brown. Scent of cherries and walnuts, a bit of spruce hop. Does not really smell all that much like an IPA. taste is a fruity/nutty sweet, with a long bitter finish. I expect an acrid note in the aftertaste, but it doesn’t come. Really nice lingering bitterness. Thin palate but it works with this beer. Surprisingly tasty.

Cask - Roast and some dark fruit with some earthy hops.  Deep maroon with a decent white head.  Burnt toast and almost no hops.  Pretty bad for an IPA.

Cask at S. Fowler & Co., Ryde during the IoW Jolly. It pours darkest brown with a small white head. The nose is roasty, caramel, treacle, cola cubes, earth, juicy and mild frutiiness. The taste is bitter, roasty, earth, caramel, treacle, burnt sugar, cola cubes and cocoa with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good balance. Very drinkable indeed.
