Séance is a dark, complexly concocted Saison, rich with earthy hues and flavors. A mild tartness begins the journey, and an underlying hop bitterness sweeps the senses through a newly opened door of the mind, where you will soon find subtle hints of ripe fruit, bringing you to a place few dare to roam.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a translucent dark brown color with a medium-sized rocky beige head. Quite unusual, I have never seen a Saison that had coloring similar to a porter or brown ale. Aroma is light toasted malt with citrus overtones. Tangy toasted malt flavor with light smoky, cocoa notes. Mid taste has some spicy hops. Finish is brief and dry. A confusing beer that defies the style. Not bad, just different.

Eventually I found the name on yet another confusing Magic Hat bottle. The beer is much darker than I expected, almost like a thin stout. A little bit of reddish highlight shows around the edges and the head is a thin tan affair after a couple minutes of dying down. Aromas are autumn-y... leaf litter and a little bit of brown sugar is about all I get, but it is pleasant enough, especially for a beer in the 4% range. First sip reveals a nice and clean dark beer - not sure if I would call it a saison, but that’s my problem - with lots of autumn leaves and a little bit of a nut edge to it. There is a hint of lemongrass that keeps it interesting and I have to say that I like this beer. Normally I find Magic Hat to underperform my hopes, but this one is very nice.

Bottle bought off the singles rack - purchased because of "saison" and "4.4% abv" on the label - then it poured nearly black and I was like, "motherfucker" - but whatever - let’s give it a chance - black saisons can be good - medium tart nose, with a little bit of raisin, smoke, bitter dark malts, a little bit of caramelized sugar sweetness - doesn’t smell at all like any kind of saison, but actually not bad so far - full, frothy mouthfeel - flavor is dry, mildly tart, and medium bitter up front - some smoke, earthy/mushroomy character, some phenols, some of which are spicy, others are of the slightly "dirty" variety, but not too much so - finish of tartness, moderate bitterness, and char - sort of like New Belgium Belgian Black, so if you like that beer... - it’s okay, just don’t expect a saison.

12 ounce bottle from the Night of the Dead mixed pack. Pours a clear dark red-brown color with a thin creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of doughy malts, nuts, a bit of caramel. The taste is chocolate, nuts, spice, mild tart fruits. Thin-medium bodied, high carbonation.
