A full flavoured stout brewed with 5 different malts, giving a sweetness which is perfectly balanced with the bitterness of English hops. After a taste of this you’ll find yourself going back to black. January special.

Cask @ Wallace Hartley, Colne. Black with a creamy-frothy off-white head. Has an easy drinking texture, although a denser taste with a mix of floral dark malts and light roasted ones. The latter is dominant in its nose.

Cask at The Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is light malt with some coffee notes. The flavour is medium to weak bitter with a watery malt light liqourice hop palate. Medium to light bodied with flat carbonation.

On cask at Derby Tup, Chesterfield - Decent enough stout, looks good, black body, two finger beige head that lasted all the way to the end. Nose was almost mocha in the beginning, before you start picking out toasted and roasted cereals. Dry to taste, but with a creamy palate which complimented it. I enjoyed this one. Not bad.

Cask, handpump, FFTMC, Oxford, Friday 14th September 2012 Very dark brown, almost black but not quite. Bit smokey in mouth with a little sausage detected. However the nose is very much liquorice, served a tad warm unlike the Raw Edge Pale Ale. Nice and a bit cooler would be even better. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1
