Originally brewed by Crown Buckley as Reverand James Original Ale, the brand was kept by Brains when they aquired Crown Buckley in 1998.
The Rev. James is named after the founder of Buckley’s Brewery the Reverend James Buckley (1770 – 1839). It is brewed to a traditional recipe and has been described as having a flavour not commonly available these days. Full-bodied and warming, The Rev. James is rich in palate, spicy and aromatic with a deeply satisfying finish.

Knocking out some quick ratings of beers gifted to me and then left unloved on the side. Had the cask already and have copied it here - turns out no amendments: Sour malty aroma. Chestnut. Good creamy off-white head. Medium bitter. More malts. Sours towards the finish, with a herbal element rearing its head. Slightly watery. Soft carbonation - a pillow for the tongue! However the astringent finish drops a point on palate. Enjoyable enough. Nothing to look at here.

Clear red-amber beer. Light aroma of malt and fruit. Taste is a splash of tangy fruit and.... very little else, in truth. A bit of citrus, some hop but it’s a bit watery and limp. There’s a touch of bitter, malty aftertaste but it really does nothing.

RBESG 2016 in Barcelona, Grand Tasting. 500 ml clear bottle, ABV 4.5%. Copper colour. Toffee, grain and dust in the aroma. Toffee and too weak hops in the fairly uninteresting flavour.

500ml bottle. Amber colour with a two finger off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruit, light spice. Taste also of sweet caramel malt, fruits, with a little hop bitterness at the end, it’s really well balanced. Nothing outstanding but easily drinkable.
