Straight from the R&D program at Firestone Walker’s Propagator pilot brewhouse comes Generation 1—an unfined and unfiltered IPA that is set for a limited-time draft release starting this week.

“Generation 1 was our first beer to be formulated and brewed at the Propagator,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It has become something of a staple there in Venice, so we decided to scale it up with a larger batch to share far and wide.”

Generation 1 will be available on draft in all Firestone Walker markets for approximately the next eight weeks.

The Propagator is a state-of-the-art small scale Kaspar Schulz brewhouse that operates as a hub of experimentation, setting the pace for what is next from Firestone Walker. Most recently, it has been the driver behind the brewery’s new Leo v. Ursus chronology of beers. The Propagator also serves as a working neighborhood brewery to produce unique one-off beers available at Firestone Walker locations.

Generation 1 is aggressively hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Mandarina hops, yet maintains a soft, agreeable texture. The result is a new generation IPA that is loaded with bold aromas and devilish drinkability.

On tap at Firestone Walker, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of tropical stone fruits, bright piney notes, and biscuity malt. Flavour is loaded with bright tropical stone fruits, bright pine, some resins, and just enough biscuity malt to back. Bright, fruity and piney. Just lovely.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours moderately hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is juicy citrus and pale stone fruit. Med plus body at least. Flavor is juicy, mostly citrus, but not bitingly so, with pale stone fruit and dare I say green melon. It's not dry, but not malty - just a little roasty caramel for support - or maybe just pale malt? Hoppy. Flavorful. Very quaffable. Good stuff from the Propagators!

Clear very light golden coloured body with a small, single centimetre tall pure whtie head that fades very quickly. Aroma of crisp melons, lemons, citrus, light resin, a touch of biscuity malt and a dose of tropical fruits with guava an passionfruit noticeable.Medium-bodied; Assertive tropical fruit flavours with a big dose of citrus, a hint of pine, a lot of dry and herbal elements and a nice bitter pure hop finish that shows nicely and while dry, reminiscent of a 'true' West Coast IPA. Aftertaste is dry, bitter, assertive and very herbal with the citrus and tropical fruit flavours showing through as well, but the hop bitterness is noticeable and front and centre with the citrus as well lasting throughout. Overall, a nice and very elegant IPA with a very citrusey and noticeable hop bitterness, that still goes down relatively easily, and has a smooth complexity. Nice to sample, especially on draught and even moreso after running 26,2 miles. I sampled this thirty-two ounce growler fill from K-1 Beer and Wine in Arlington, Virginia on 21-October-2017 for US$8,49 sampled at home a day later after finishing the USMC Marathon 2017 for the seventh time at home in Washington.

32oz crowler pours with a clear gold body that supports a nice dirty white head. The modest aroma offers up tropical fruitiness lined with herbal and grassy and floral like hoppiness. The taste delivers spicy herbal hop, floral hop and citrus hop bitterness riding above a thin smooth stream of sweet malts that have a faint wheat sort of banana ester sensation. It distorts into a soft vaguely tropical fruitiness to midway as the moderate degree of hop bitterness fades. Interesting. A few more sips and it seems to finish mildly cracker malt like. This creates an interesting hop blend that's good but I'm not wild about.

Draught @ Malt&Mold. Clear golden with small frothy white head, sweet citrus aroma, medium carbonation, mildly bitter taste with permeating citrus flavor, smooth body, long citrusy finish. Incredible flavor profile coupled with very smooth body, recipe for disaster if you think you can limit yourself!
