During transport overseas, early India Pale Ales were stored in wooden barrels. In these barrels—beer experts suppose—some ales were naturally inoculated with Brettanomyces, a form of wild yeast. Brett IPA plays off this piece of brewing lore by pairing Brettanomyces—a yeast that exhibits itself as ripe fruit rather than strong funk or sourness—with multiple varieties of fruit-forward hops.

Aromas of citrus, pineapple, and passion fruit meld into tropical flavors that pair nicely with the beer’s lightly hopped body. Maris Otter, Munich malts, and raw wheat balance the floral barrage of Bravo, Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, and Galaxy hops. By finishing with a mix of pleasant bitterness and tropical fruit, Brett IPA ushers brewing history into the present.

Lemon zest, brett, pear aroma, strong. Opaque amber, thin head. Orange, tangerine, and grapefruit, musty brett accents. Medium body, easy carbonation. Juicy, bright, and wonderful.

Good brett IPA, tropical and bitter but unmistakably Allagash. Easygoing malt notes bring crackers and some cereal sweetness, while the wheat provides a grassy saison undercurrent with hints of clove and vanilla. The hops offer up mango, lemon, grapefruit and stone fruit to the equation, while the back end grows yeasty and bitter, the slightest tinge of funk adding depth to the finish. Creamy feel with just enough carbonation to keep things exciting. Nose is way funkier than the actual beer. Good pour, hazy yellow-gold with a slight white head and the teensiest bit of lace. Nice, but could use a little more funk.

Pours hazy gold into a tulip. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Tropical fruit aromas. Sweet mango and papaya upfront turning to resin before a mild funky weed finish.

Bottle purchased at Spruce Creek Provisions. Bottled on 7/6/17. Dry-hopping in the aroma is fantastic mixed with the light Brettanomyces. The flavor has the house yeast on funk with a huge fruit character. Funky note is balanced by fruit and musty basement hints. Carbonation works with the dry textures. Everything about this works for me.

Keg at Novare Res - Portland, ME. Pours unclear gold with a foamy, white head. Good stuff, with mild funk, melon, woodsy and grassy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Drying in the finish, with some musty funk, a little citrus peel. Good stuff. Quite drinkable.
