… and England have failed to qualify for the World Cup, 2 Unlimited are Top of the Pops with their dance smash No Limit, Shane Warne has bowled the ‘Ball of the Century’ and Rooster’s Brewing Co. has just hatched - forever changing the shape of beer in the UK. Originators and innovators of quality, new world pale ales, with an emphasis on flavour and aroma, our beers start to stand out and turn heads amongst a sea of brown beer, with Yankee (our flagship pale ale) leading the way.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Amber with a thin white head; woody, herbal aroma; smooth texture with sweet vanilla flavours over a clean fresh bitterness, and a disappointingly short finish. Interesting.

Cask, Rockliffe Arms, Whitley Bay. Bronze colour with a thin head, medium lace. Caramel malt/toffee aroma with some decent fruit and hop in there too. Gently bitter. Reasonably balanced and quite drinkable.

Cask handpull at The Hope Tap, JDW, Reading. Gold, lasting thick off white head. Looking forward to this as I like Roosters. Fragrant spice runs through it, doesn’t dominate but definite presence. Subtle perfumed spice on aroma, bit of caramel in flavour. Finish is pretty muted. Not very hoppy.

Cask, half pint served at the very right drinking temperature at The Wheatsheaf Bar in Stoke. Well kept beer with a delicious aroma of floral hops. Mild spiced taste with a discreet touch of soft grapefruits. Short bitter endnotes. Rather thin on the swallow. Golden-amber body with no head. Great aroma, but weaker in flavour (JDWs Real Ale Festival, 02.05.2009).

Cask at W’Spoons Northwood Hills. Golden beer with a slight head. Fresh, fruity, citrus. Hops were not overpowering. Overall not bad for a festival beer at Spoons one of the better offerings.

[Gravity cask at Back of Beyond, Reading] Golden amber. Initial taste of straw and farmyard, slight carbonation. Flavour grows to reveal earth and then a spicy tingle, which I couldn’t identify as coriander particularly but was nevertheless quite pleasant. Some fruit, smoke and bitter citrus in finish. After disliking this initially, I grew to like it quite a lot. c5

(Cask at Ye Olde Mitre, Hatton Garden, London, 15 Apr 2009) Dark amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of dried fruit, nuts and earthy hops. Malty, nutty taste with dark fruit, dried figs and dusty hops. A decent, fairly standard bitter.
