Description
Back in the mid ’90s, an old Victorian cider press and mill were bought at auction by a man wanting to try out making his own home-made version of his favourite tipple. Apples were picked from nearby orchards and the machinery was put into action. The juice was left to ferment over a few months, and what was produced was the beginnings of what Bristol Ciderworks is today. For a couple of years it was a bit of fun for Greg and his friends, a venture into the world of real cider-making and real cider-drinking. Over the years the machinery used has been updated, and the quantity of cider made has grown, but essentially it’s the same stuff.

Bladder bag on the Three Brothers burger barge, Bristol, 07/10/23. Unclear Irn Bru orange with a white head that escapes to the edge. Nose is light funk, tangy apples, tannins, straw. Taste comprises apple pulp, sugars, light farmyard, sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Okay drop but runs a bit sweet for my liking.

Keg @ The Grapes, Bath. Pours a disconcertingly vivid pink. Quite bright in the glass. Strong rhubarb aroma, continuing to taste, clean light palate. Juicy moments. Big rhubarb presence. Ok but the WKD appearance is a bit off-putting.

Keg from the brewer's own stall at the Chippenham Food and Drink Festival. Shocking vivid pink, bordering on flourescent. No fizz. Given the seemingly artificial colour, it's surprising to find that it doesn't taste artificial. Instead it's full-on fresh, vibrant ripe rhubarb all the way through. It was maybe just slightly on the sweet side by the end, and could do with a little cider dryness or tartness - this really is totally rhubarb. If you like rhubarb and you're looking for a fresh, tasty, natural summer drink, this could do the job. But maybe not the one to go for if you want to actually taste cider!

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Cloudy orange in colour with a small and short-lived white head, and moderate carbonation. Pronounced aroma of fresh, dry apples, yeast and a hint of spice. Spritzy mouth feel, with a tart flavour of fruit, the barnyard and a lingering dry finish. A very good example of a bottled cider.
