We combine these with traditional brewing methods, an open brewing spirit and a never-ending drive to top quality.

One of this Antwerp brewing company's new beers, steinie bottle from the Delhaize supermarket in Lokeren. Claims to have the softness of a dubbel and the richness of a quadrupel, but since quadrupel is basically nothing else than an extra strong dubbel and this beer clocks in a 9% ABV, this is a quadrupel by definition - so do away with that confusing 'qua-dubbel' description please. Anyway: very thick, yellowish beige, very foamy and frothy head, lacing and moussy, thinning and opening slowly over a lightly hazy, very dark ruddy chestnut coloured beer with warm wine red hue; more misty with sediment. Inviting, but very classically Belgian quad aroma of dried plum, candied fig, coriander seed, muscovado sugar, chocolate-coated cashew nuts, dried banana, cloves, brownies, treacle, ruby port, nougat, hazelnuts, toasted bread crust, brandy. Sweet onset, brown candi sugar sweetness with fruity notes of freshly cut red apple, dried banana and fig, soft sourish undertone, medium carbonation, full, rounded and bit creamy, as well as slightly resinous mouthfeel, completely fit for the style. Toffeeish, caramelly and brown-bready malt body with a soft, thin toasty bitter edge in the end, blending with strong coriander seed soapy-spiciness, herbal and earthy, slightly tea-ish, late hop bitterness, clove-like 'Belgian' phenols well-applied in this case, and strong but not too obnoxious, pleasantly glowing brandy-tinged alcohol. Sweetness lingers after swallowing, fig and caramel, but the bitterness remains as well, both toasty and alcoholic in nature. Very typical quadrupel, relatively well-bodied and well-balanced, clearly the great trappists in this particular style provided all inspiration here - but within that tried and tested mold, this is better executed than I was expecting. Technically flawless, full and rich, there are many worse trappist-imitating quads on the Belgian market. Just that name... How cliché can you get? Even back in the seventies and eighties traditional Belgian brewers were often more inventive in their name-giving...
