650ml bottle from Pacific Liquor store in PoCo. Commander Reserve 2013, bottle #553 of 600. Pours an almost black with a brown head. Aroma is dark fruits, roasted malt, some vanilla, leather, roasted seeds and chocolate notes. Taste is pretty the same with low to moderate sweetness and low bitterness. Slightly dry, dark roasted malt, some chocolate notes aftertaste. Very good!

Poured from 341mL bottle. Orangey brown with off-white head. Seriously, is this just the nut brown ale with some cherry juice added? Cherry flavour is fairly mild, not tart or "atomic" at all. Other than the mild cherry, same qualities of the nut brown - nutty caramel malt, light body, kinda boring.

Cloudy, light tan. Not much head. The aroma is orangey, to be sure, and quite yeasty, with some pale malt character. But very yeasty for a heller bock. Sweetish, with a nice orangey note but then there’s just a yeasty mess underneath. The bocky strength is there, but the beautiful clean malt taste of a heller bock is not - it’s a muddy, yeasty, vaguely malty taste instead. This shows me that there’s a lack of technical skill behind this beer, at least bock brewing skill.

650 ml bottle. Pours a hazy reddish orange with no head. Aromas and flavors of citrusy blueberries with vegetal notes. Not much more to say than other raters. Not a great beer. Paid 3.99 at the LDB so guess I should have expected the outcome. Million dollar question is why the LDB would put this on the shelf when there are so any other better products?

Tasting at Matt’s
Hazy amber color. Hazy amber color. Spicy earthy character from the rye, good body strength, orangey hops. Solid, too earthy for me.

Quite dark amber, with a bit of haze. There isn’t a whole lot of head on this one. The aroma has some tropical and berryish hops, a fair bit of rye but overall really does come across as chewy. On the palate, it is fairly sweet, with a mellow rye character. There is a hit of earthy hops, again with a bit of a berryish note. Touch of alcohol in the back, again with chewy notes.

650mL bottle, pours a hazy dark amber mahogany with a small white head. Aroma brings out earthy hops, some grapefruit and bready malt. Flavour brings out lots of earthy hops and spiciness from the rye, followed by grapefruit, and bready malt. Spicy, earthy finish. Nicely balanced and easy enough to drink.
