About
Our quest for truly great Scottish beer started in 2006 when our brewpub was opened. Ever since then, we have been brewing the finest artisan lagers and wheat beers in the UK. We brew all of our beers in strict accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, which we believe is simply the best way to make great beer.
WEST, under the leadership of Bavarian-born Petra Wetzel, is the only UK brewery to officially adhere to the Reinheitsgebot, merging centuries of traditional practice with state-of-the-art equipment. Our German roots are firmly planted in Glasgow and our company ethos can best be summed up as ‘Glaswegian Heart. German Head’.

Draft @ Moxy SEC, Glasgow. Clear gold with a small white head due to being served the British way. Aroma of vanilla and grains. Taste of grains, straw and hints of lemons. Low bitterness. Medium carbonation. Dull. I had higher expectations when the barkeeper advertised it as a German-style beer made by locals from around the corner.

Can from Aldi, Ellon. It pours cloudy deep golden - orange with a decent white head. The aroma is sweet, perfumed, chalky, powdered sugar, banana split, giant banana candy, warming clove spice, banana milkshake, nougat and grass. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, juicy, bright, pithy, zesty, lemon, lime, sherbety, banana split, green chalky banana, grassy bitterness which lingers and light alcohol with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Nice hoppy hefe. Drinks decent.

The taste is firmly dry, bitter - sweet, bitter hit lingers throughout, peppery spice, resinous, sappy, pine, pithy, zesty, bitter citrus rin and floral with a drying finish. Keg at West brewery. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Steady carbonation. Patchy lacing. Aroma of lemon and grain. Flavour of cereal and a light hoppy finish. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Quite lager-like. Needs more of a hoppy kick.

Keg at West brewery. Murky bronze body with an off-white head. Good lacing. Aroma of lemon and green banana. Flavour of tangy lemon and chalky wheat. Medium to full body with a smooth mouthfeel. Light fizz. It’s a slightly hoppier version of a wheat beer. I liked it.

Can from Green's of Ellon. It pours clear amber - brown with a decent off-white cap. The aroma is bitter - sweet, toasty, oily, unctuous, lovely rich oak smoked malt, dull vanilla, honey glazed ham, frazzles and brown bread. The taste is fairly crisp and firmly dry initially, then its bitter - sweet, oily, unctuous, good depth of rich oak smoked malt, oily, smokey bacon, slick and sweet, touch of honey glazed ham and hint of vanilla with some toasted brown bread on the finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. A rather nice rauchbier. Tasty and moreish. Well executed.
