Bottle. From the advertising I expectedto dislike this, it didn’t shout out quality beer. I was wrong. Whilst it’s not a great beer, it’s pretty decent. It’s clear gold with a passable off white head. The aroma is a pleasant mix of honey, caramel and flowery hops. The palate is unusual as the body is medium whilst the carbonation gives it a creamy mouthfeel. The taste is where it gets diffilcult. The initial taste is great; sweet malty foretaste, with some fruitiness making a nice transition to a reasonable hoppy bitterness, but then it all disappears. The taste collapses in your mouth when you expect the hoppy bitterness to give a long finish. I guess this may be a good idea for a session beer, but it left me a little disappointed.

Hints of pink in the completely clear amber. Pink-tinged head disappeared. First sniff: raspberries. Second: raspberry cordial. Later, you can pick up some malt and cheesiness. Fortunately not as sweet as suggested. Not terrible, but the raspberry overwhelms the beer leaving it very simple. Needed some ballsy malt or some residual yeast to underpin it. Still, it’s recognisably not an alcopop.

Bottle (new packaging). Pours caramel, huge tan head. Smells nutty and chocolatey. Some roastiness. Fairly thin body, not too sweet - I had it fairly cold to begin with, but it’s still not too sweet now it’s warmed up to room temp. Ends with a bit of chewiness. Carbonation helps keep the mouthfeel end up clean. A little woody at the end, too. Not really complex, but well-balanced and pleasant.

[11/09] Bottle. Bronze, medium light beige head. Tight hop nose, with citrus zest, clean malts, hard herbs and maybe cloves. Taste has very fruity malts. Vaguely medicinal and long bitter aftertaste. Perhaps a little light on the malt and alcohol given the inviting aroma. Good. [3.7] [11/10] Bottle. Copper, nice off-white to beige head that fades a bit but laces well. Aroma has kumquats, pine, caramel, slight spices. Quite assertive initial bitterness, nectarine and caramel. Medium bitter finish has citrus with some herbal and pine notes.[5/14] Bottle. Had a rather dull one of these at the Port Melbourne brewery a while ago, so pleased to see this is still working well. Still a bit overpriced, but a lovely beer that’s been around for a long time.

Bottle. Gold, white head with some lacing. Some Saaz hop aroma. Quite citrusy, with a mild malt body. Modest dry finish. Respectable pils.

Stubby. Pale amber with a dense off-white head. Faintly metallic citrus and stone fruit aromas. Thin body with slight early hop bitterness. Modest dry aftertaste. Very lightweight for the style. But I guess a better-than-usual bog-standard Australian session beer was what they were going for here and on that measure, they’ve done well. A gateway beer. [2.8] Coming back to this I didn’t do it as many favours as I recalled. Kind of dull caramel, but there’s some stone fruit and citrus. I don’t mind the modest flavour and it’s well-balanced. But it’s very watery.

Golden amber pour with a small head showing reasonable persistence.Aroma is quite faint, there’s some grainy aussie malt and possible some pride of ringwood hops? A bit of sweet honey in the background.Flavours are very similar: grainy malt with a little supporting sweet honey and a hint of grassy hops.Soft, fine carbonation.

Bottled, thx to NoiZe. Clear redbrown color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, some grapes. Sourish taste, quite dry, skin of dark plums, some cherry pits. Quite dry palate. Strange.

ON-TAP: Pours gold/amber, good 2cm head shows reasonable retention and decent lacing.Key feature of this beer is the pungent cigar-like hops aroma that emanates from the glass, almost like a bag of fresh hops just opened for a homebrew. The expected floral hops and sweet malt are also present.Taste isn’t as impressive, some of the hops transfers through, but otherwise it’s just sweet malt and an incredibly weak (for the style) bitterness. BOTTLE: Aroma lacks the cigar character the tap version has, replaced with a green grassy aroma. Perhaps this is just due to freshness. Taste is a lot more malt dominated, a has a slightly more potent hoppy bitterness. More like an English Pale than an APA.

Dark copper/ruby. Thick tan head, nice and creamy.Toasty malt dominated aroma, almost roasted. Quite sweet though, there’s definitely some toffee and caramel. It’s all quite subtle though.Flavour is mostly roasted malt. Again, its quite sweet. No bitterness, very little hops.Good creamy carbonation.
