440 mL nitro can from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA, on 5/6/10. Pours a clear amber color with a thick creamy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, floral hops and fruity notes. The taste is caramel, apples, toasted malts and a mildy hoppy finish. Thin-medium bodied and creamy.

widget can - Pours copper with a moderately sized, fluffy white head. It has a light aroma of malt and English hops. Not much. The flavor is of bland malt with a bit of caramel and some mild bitterness. It’s creamy and light bodied. It’s a really underwhelming bitter.

The nitro widget makes the beer look great. I’m a sucker for that bizarre head. On the down side, it seems to pull some fullness out of the feel as the nitrogen subsides. The nose is all caramel, maybe with a touch of earthy hops. The flavors are buttery caramel, biscuit, some slight bitter tartness and some subtle hops. This beer isn’t bad, but I can imagine how much better a traditional English ale could be and that’s a rough comparison. Good beer for the style, but there’s not a huge amount of high quality competition with wide distribution.

On tap. Poured a slightly hazy amber gold with a thick white head that lasts throughout. Aroma was a bit weak with hay malt notes and not much else. Flavor was weak as well with malt notes through out.

Cask handpull at Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Deep chestnut colour, suspicious grey white head. Fruity bizarre beer. Bit of green apple flavour. It’s bizarre. I like it and I don’t. Not a great aorma, green apple in mouth, slight hop, but I do like the swallow.

Cask, handpump at The Figure of Eight, JDW, Birmingham 13-12-09 Pours conker brown with a thin white rim of bubbles. Christmassy type name and christmassy type taste. The aroma is of icing sugar and marzipan, in fact there is a definate nod to Christmas cake throughout this beer, little bit weak tasting, some spice. A6 A4 F7 P4 Ov13 3.2
