Description
Commonwealth Brewing Co was founded as the manifestation of one family’s love for making uncompromising, exceptional beer and sharing the experiences with friends. The spark of inspiration was ignited during a revelatory European brewery and beer hall tour while Jeramy was visiting Natalie, who was traveling (aka wandering) abroad for two years. But it wasn’t until 2013, after years of stove top excellence, beer geekery and a house too full of brewing equipment, that it was time to fully embrace the craft beer lifestyle.

Commonwealth opened Sept 6, 2015 as a result of next level commitment, mild insanity, family, friends and a profound sense of purpose. Since then, we’ve grown into a tight knit band of like minded people who believe beer should be adventurous, diverse, extremely drinkable, and defy boundaries. We honor farmhouse traditions, huge hop American styles, and the complex depths of wild fermentations.

Located inside a fully renovated, former fire and rescue station built in 1962 and nestled in a funky beach cottage community (flip flops mandatory) on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, our facility is complete with a double garage bay tasting room, private event spaces, an outdoor beer garden, and a conditioned barrel cellar housing hundreds of barrels of mixed fermentations for long term aging.

Canned 4/23, drunk 5/15/18.
Heavily hazy-to-soupy, pale bronze-golden. White head to ring.
Not the very best Galaxy expression I've smelled, but it's very close....White wine, juicy lime, passion fruit and tons of spice and mineral. Very aromatic with soft honey-like malts behind it and a touch of biscuit. Very bright and doesn't come across as 8.3% at all. No alcohol, flaw or resin.
In the mouth it shows a perfect texture with plentiful juice and mineral character from the hop. A bit more spiciness and white wine and this would be just about perfect for a Galaxy DIPA. Attenuation, malt texture and carbonation are all spot-on. No resin, alcohol or flaw. Juicy, bright, elegant and showing no aggressiveness or heaviness on the palate.

Pounder: Mild grass nose. Clear amber, thin head. Corn, grass. Light body, moderate carbonation. Eh, I'm just not a fan of this sub-style. I guess this is as good as it gets.

$4.70 pint can, Wine Warehouse. Pours murky orange, like juice with a small soft off-white head. Aroma is green hops, orange peel, light pine, tropical fruit juice, and I may be crazy but leeks/chives/scallions/green onion. Flavor is thick fruit, both citrus and stone, along with some pine, bitter floral hops, some green vegetation - not quite the leek/chive etc but along that line, and aspirin. Interesting, but not one of my favorites. I see it's well made, but the lingering aftertaste of aspirin reminds me of tomorrow morning.

$5.00 pint can, Wine Warehouse. Pours like orange juice with a small off-white head. Aroma is pine, pot, orange juice, grapefruit peel, cat piss, tropical fruit. Flavor is bitter pine, grapefruit rind, pineapple, green citrus. Finishes slightly herbal - not quite rosemary but in that family. Need to remind myself to now pound this one. At 10% this thing hides the booze.

16oz can pours a murky, pulpy gold with some creamy, white head. Nose has orange and malt, oats and straw, a little cheese rind. Flavor has more fruit, tropical now to go along with the citrus, honey comb, still a bit cheesy. Finishes creamy but dry.

Canned 4/4/18, drunk 5/11/18.
Fully hazy-to-cloudy, copper-bronze-maize. Off-white head fades steadily to cover.
Uh oh. Already very malty and full of caramel with light oxidation obvious. Bread, biscuit and only light mango-lime for hops, almost as an afterthought.
In mouth it's well-attenuated with a soft texture but just tired and malt heavy with oxidation and abundant caramel showing too strongly for its age. Lightly bitter lime, mango and heavy apricot marmalade. Good honey character and great carbonation. Guess it should have been opened sooner, but still surprised it's this oxidized. No alcohol or resin or flaw.
