Description
Hay Camp Brewing Company is Rapid City's first production brewery. We are a nanobrewery that produces small batch handcrafted beers exclusive to onsite sales. The tavern emulates Rapid City's early developmental era, originally established as a hay camp in the Black Hills. With Karl Koth and Sam Papendick being brewers and tavern operators, the customers will be educated on how each beer is unique and which offering pairs best with their particular taste. And our front of the house main man, Sam Coil, will be offering up great events and good times. We look forward to serving up the best craft brews in town.

Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 6.5

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, very fast-dying just barely tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, light caramelised sugars, some mellow oatmeal and grain and more of a dry maltiness with some earth and very little else. Medium-bodied; Relatively strong toasted malt and hazlenut flavours show through with some light spices, a bit of earthiness and very little else - perhaps some light grain and bready flavours. Aftertaste shows some more of the deeper robust caramelised sugar sweetness, along with some very mild nutty flavours and a dash of bread, but the alcohol does creep through, as does the slight thinness of the body, even light for being a porter. Overall, a decent enough porter, but shows almost more like a brown ale, as it's a bit thin on the edges, lacking in pungent malt complexities and showing a very simplistic finish, especially compared to the style. Somehow, still nice enoough to sample, as one of the last beers I sampled here on my first ever visit to South Dakota, sampled this pint on draught at Thirsty's in Rapid City, South Dakota on 01-July-2020 for US$5,00.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a deep opaque black, oily glow, all with a very thin off-white head that tops the beer. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, earth and a good deal of lactose - but nothing horribly strong. Medium-bodied; Super robust bourbon and whiskey flavours dominate at first with a big alcohol burn, despite not too high of an alcohol presence, a dry cedar-like flavour along with some oak, light licorice and anise flavours and a touch of toffee and caramelised sugars towards the end. Aftertaste shows the roasted malts, light Pacific NorthWest hops that show a very citrusey and piney characteristic, but the bourbon and whiskey notes are by far the strongest, leaving a dry, slow alcohol burn on the palate. Overall, an interesting and strong-flavoured beer that really shows off the bourbon, alcohol, caramelised sugar and roasted malt notes, but the complexity and robust chararacteristics just aren't there, along with the structure and balance of this - there aren't any hops nor sugars to balance out the warm alcohol or roasted malts. Good to sample, but I'd pass on this again, and I'm happy I didn't fly back home with this one! I sampled this 65 cL (gold and black) wax sealed bottle, purchased from Smith's Liqour Gallery in Rapid City, South Dakota on 25-June-2020 for US$18,99 sampled in my hotel room here in Hot Springs, South Dakota on 28-June-2020.
