Cask @ Crescent Moon. Hazy, brown appearance with a foamy, tan head. Strawberry pie filing, toasty, dark malty nose. Pretty potent strawberry shortcake, toasty, dark malty flavor. Interesting idea but not all that good.

12 oz bottle generously given to me by a friend. Best enjoyed by Month 06 Year 11 notched on the label. Pour is a slightly hazed golden orange with a pretty two inch dirty white head. The head falls with nice lacing. The aroma is a nice soft peatiness and a light mineral earthiness. Under the peat is a nice clean toasted maltiness. Taste starts with the earthy peat character, and moves quickly into sweet maltiness and finishes with a decent blast of diacetyl. This clears a bit as it warms, but remains in the long finish. Palate is medium bodied, slick oily mouthfeel and the fake butter finish. I’ll try this one again, I liked the initial nose - hope its a bit of an off bottle.

Black Hills Beer Fest - Muddy copper pour with a small sandy head. Musty malt and floral scent, but not quite earthy. Taste gets in some peat, malty sweetness, and bitter florals. Now the earthiness comes forth. Not bad.

Black Hills Beer Fest - served from the cask (and rumored to be the first cask beer served in South Dakota). Pours a dark brown color with a finger of creamy tan head. Smells like a dark chocolate brownie with raspberry syrup. Nice progression of the base beer. Tastes more rich in the chocolate with a lot less of the roast coming through. The raspberries compliment the beer and blend in seamlessly. One of my favorites of the day. Right on!
