Description
We have been orchardists since the 1920s when we began to grow Roman Beauty apples on the farm. When we began specifically producing cidre apples in 2000, the entire orchard was transformed around that intent and slowly took shape. Surrounding the orchards, the larger farm produces a wide variety of fruits that diversify the land and aid in the pollination process, including peaches, pears, and hazelnuts.
Today, we grow a wide variety of heirloom cidre apples including French and English bittersweets, and American semi-sharps. In the Willamette Valley of Oregon where we farm, the ground is an ancient seabed full of rich and nutritious soil. With so much nutrition available to the trees, we have to suppress their vigor through pruning and selection to ensure that each apple receives the most intense nurturing for flavor and aromatics.

We grow our apples with specific cidre blends in mind. As you walk the grounds, it becomes clear that it’s organized around specific cultivation and harvesting techniques, enabling us to manage a precise maturation on the tree that we improve with every year’s lessons.

2011 vintage. Bottle from letspour dot com, remember them? :-( Ommegang tulip glass. Lushious, foaming, oily off white head. Prettiest glass of cider I’ve ever seen. A clear, honey/marmalade-colored body. Nose is fuming with tannic, dry, nostril-piercing sharps & seriously stone-y, pear-like browned fruit. Big tannins dripping all over the first sip, moderate, lingering acid & super faint wildness. Bright, dry fruit leaves me with a little peasant cotton mouth. Lots of core. Smooth, beaded carbonation is lighter then expected (& makes this super easy). Drinks a little stronger then the 6% on the label. Otherwise, it’s one of the best made ciders I’ve ever had. :-)

Sample at West End Ciderhouse. Pours a crystal clear very pale yellow color with a thin white head that burns away quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing. Apple and pear aroma. Light-bodied with flavors of pear, floral honey and apple. The finish is fruity and semi-dry with a pear aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle from Whole Foods Bowery. Pint Glass pour. Clear, gold body. Fizzy. Vinegary, green, apple mulch scent. Lightly cheesy. Taste is a bolder version of above, though with a moderate amount of barnyard. Softly sweet, more vinegar then acid. Old wood. Mild tannins. Touch of plastic. Yeast on the finish. Texture is really meaty. Slightly thick and creamy, while still maintaining inviting carbonation. Different. I liked it.

On tap at Bushwhacker Woodlawn, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out some nice funk and crisp dry apple skins. Flavour is quite sweet, with lots of funk and dusty apple skins. The sweet melds with the farmhouse notes really well. Very good.

500 ml bottle from City Beer. It pours a clear golden color with an initially large fizzy head that disappears quickly. The aroma is nice with strong brett phenolics, a little bandaid some spice and apple. The flavor is a good balance of sweet apples and light funky wild notes. The sweetness comes through rather strong, so I imagine Id probably prefer the dry version, but this is still very complex and tasty. Lots of wild fermentation character that provides a backdrop for the apple sweetness. Probably the second best cider Ive had to date.
