Description
Oxbow is a small farmhouse brewery located in rural Newcastle, Maine. The brewery is nestled in an enchanted forest amongst rolling farmlands and winding tidal rivers, of which the ebb and flow provide a constant reminder that the coast is near.
The name Oxbow is inspired by the bends in these rivers, the Dyer in particular, which features stunning horseshoe-shaped oxbows where the river covers tremendous ground to travel what could otherwise be a very short linear distance. We employ a similar approach when crafting our beers, taking months or years to create a beverage that is commonly produced in a matter of days.

On tap at Monks Cafe. Aroma is very fresh with lots of nice fruit esters, pear and apple being most dominant, good floral notes from the hops that also add a touch of spice and some pepper and clove phenolics. Pours a cloudy pale straw yellow with a pillowy white head. Head recedes fairly quickly. No lacing or legs. Flavor has light malt character upfront, grain and bready. This is quickly washed away with an assertive but moderate bitterness. The bitterness brings in a nice floral and spicy noble hop character which balances nicely with the esters and phenolics from the yeast. Esters are pear, apple and a hint of banana. Phenolics are clove and peppercorn. Finish is dry and bitter with a nice spicy phenolic character. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium high carbonation. There is a low hop astringency and allow alcohol warmth. A very enjoyable clean Saison. The yeast is phenolic and estery but not sour or funky at all. The hop character is refreshing and a nice addition to the yeast character.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Dupont tap ($9): Pours a light and cloudy golden color with a white head. Aroma is buttery, slightly lemony, popcorrnish, and a bit funky. Taste is buttery popcorn sans le salt. There is a little bit of sourness in there towards the finish. Body is very light and part of me wished that there was an additional 1 abv. Nice amount of complexity for such a light beer in any case.

25.4 oz bottle at Churchkey in Washington DC, generously shared with my by Travlr. Batch #4. The pour is a hazed orange golden, with a well formed white head. The aroma is big Brett leather, bright vanilla oak, lemon citrus, some nuttiness and grain from the malt and wheat. Quite a bit going on in the nose, and nicely integrated. The taste is big on the Brett notes initially, leather, funk, citrus and then moves towards the vanilla oak flavors. The vanilla oak lingers in the long after taste. The palate is medium to light bodied, active carbonation and a dry finish showing first the leathery funk Brett then the vanilla oak. I really enjoyed the nose, though the taste was a bit heavy on the barrel for my tastes. Regardless, nice beer, well crafted. Thanks for sharing this one Gene.

Bottle shared with theisti. Almost a gusher, but not quite. Cloudy golden orange color, fluffy white head, solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, light smooth lemon meringue, very subtle pineapple, dust. Taste is fruity, peppery, dusty, with just a bit of funk. Delicious.
