Description
In 1991, Jeff Robinson returned home from Desert Storm with a plan. In March of 1992, with the help of his wife Sherri, the former helicopter pilot for the 101st Airborne Division opened a small pub in downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. But the couple’s vision didn’t stop with only a restaurant.

In 1995, they completed construction on their own brewery, making the newly christened Blackhorse Pub & Brewery one of the earliest Southeastern craft brew houses of the 90’s. They chose the name “Blackhorse” in honor of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. While Jeff never served in that unit, he admired the Cavalry’s spirit and energy, qualities he hoped the Pub would come to embody.

More than 20 years later, THE BLACKHORSE PUB & BREWERY has become a mainstay in Clarksville as a gathering place for friends and family. It is known for both its comfortable atmosphere and willingness to break new ground.

In that spirit, Knoxville was a natural next step for the Blackhorse. It’s Sherri’s hometown, where she and Jeff met as students at the University of Tennessee, and where all three of their children have now attended college.

We are honored to bring the craft of beer to the historic town of Alcoa, Tennessee, located in the heart of Blount County. Our 15,000-square-foot brewing facility will be the heart of our beer production, canning, and bottling. While the facility itself won’t offer tours, plans are underway to add a small restaurant and beer garden, so the Alcoa community can gather and enjoy our refreshing beers in a scenic setting.

Admin Note: Production moved from Knoxville to Alcoa in 2021.

Just don’t dig adding vanilla on top of a cream ale. Adds sweet on sweet, but no depth; tastes like a watered-down cream soda. Pass.

Slightly hazy golden color with a thin white head that burns away quickly to a film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of floral hops, fruit and malt. Medium body with flavors of mild floral hop, stone fruit and bready malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a fruity hop aftertaste. Decent overall.

Pint at the brewpub. Pours black, with a big, foamy, beige head. The nose is mellow coffee, toast, hay, and chicory. Sweet and malty, with a mild, burnt bitterness. Simple and solid.

Sampled at the brewpub. Pours a clear, golden color, with a big, frothy, white head. The aroma is straw, orange peel, and some basic cereals. Sweet and malty, with an easy bitterness. Light to medium body, with a syrupy, lightly acidic palate. This is a simplistic but well made IPA.

Can from Trader Joe's. Pours a clearish copper with a finger of foam that lingers. Caramel, pine and old malt aromas. Bitter pine resin, toasted caramel. Slightly oxidized. Lingering woody bitterness, twigs. Not my cup of tea. --- Beer merged from original tick of IPA on 04 Apr 2018 at 18:50 - Score: 6. Original review text: Caramel, one and old malt aromas. Bitter pine resin, toasted caramel. Slightly oxidized. Lingering woody bitterness, twigs.

Bottle: Clear, bubbled amber with a huge, light tan head. Caramel, cream/milk scent. Taste is caramel malt.....sweet, but lightly (at first) lacticity. Starts ok....but the lactic notes get a little sharp after a while.....other than that, not much stands out in this one.

Pours a hazy orange with no lack of foam and retention of said foam.
Grassy nose that also has hints of tropical fruit. That grows as I take more whiffs.
Grass actually gives way to mango, pineapple and then grapefruit. Pretty bitter I’ll my book. Dank even.
You may ask, what aboot the malt? Well when you are dealing with Sorachi Ace, Citra, Simcoe and Cascade hops, you are pretty much focused on them and try describing what they bring to the table. Cracker? Biscuit? ??
Smooth mouthfeel. Hops linger on my tongue like forever. Initially, I wasn’t that impressed. Til palate familiarity set in. I would drink it again, no problem.

Lemon yellow, fairly long lasting foam. I get oranges, pineapple, Belgian spice and yeast aromas. Taste is like rinds were thrown in my glass. Pungent bitterness of orange and grapefruit, mild pineapple sweetness, spicy with hints of cloves and yeast. Very sip worthy.
