Description

Bottle from LDW, Eke. Cloudy yellow colour, white foam. Nose of lemon, wood, sweet wine. Also some bready notes, hints of peach. Not bad!

One of four Cuvée Jubilée variations De Leite made for its tenth birthday, a lightly smoked saison aged on oak chips with a dash of whisky infuse thrown in apparently. From tap at Ganzerik, Ghent. Thin and mousy, egg-white, open ring of a head quickly reduced to some small bubbles around the edge, cloudy yellow blonde with somewhat greenish tinge. Aroma of unripe nectarine, stewed rhubarb, yellow plum, soapy wheat, fresh sage, chalk, dried lemon peel, vanilla-ish oaky touch, 'Agrum'-themed lemonade, bread crumbs, green apple peel but remaining very discreet in the whisky aspect (almost impossible to pick out). Fruity onset, apple, green pear, white peach, banana peel and a touch of grape, softish carb, wheaty soapy slickness, white-bready and supple, very smooth, with a light bitter ending also carrying sage- and thyme-like herbal aspects; the vanilla-ish oak pops up again too, but again very subtly so, with only the softest of tannic effects. The smoky note too remains very understated, but a citrusy freshness does show up, as well as a strong chalky flavour. What does not show up, however, is the whisky... Quite surprising and refreshing, distinctive beer, even if it hardly delivers what it promises - this turns out very different from what I was expecting, but enjoyable and interesting nonetheless.

A De Leite regular which apparently escaped my attention so far, onverbitterbaar and apparently intended as a Belgian 'bitter blonde'. Thick and densely mousy, egg-white, fluffy, thickly plaster-lacing, frothy and stable head on a cloudy, warm orange-tinged peach blonde beer. Aroma of dry tree leaves, old bread crust, old 'herbes de Provençe', sweaty grains, banana peel, iron shavings, egg yolk, bitter garden weeds, old cheese crackers, dusty dry earth, dried apple peel, hard green pear. Fruity onset in an estery, but only restrainedly sweet way, unripe pear, green banana, vague touch of hard green melon, medium carbonation but in a softish, 'refined' kind of way, soft and fluffy, bready malt body with sharper grainy and slightly metallic edges, underlying grainy sourishness, quickly and firmly bittered by a deeply earthy, very leafy, rooty hoppiness, quinine- and bitterroot-like, with a soapy aspect to it that lingers along with this firm, ongoing, drying, spicy and quinine-like hop bitterness, which, very subtly and briefly, releases a faint dash of sweet orange peel retronasally. Bready yeasty notes 'fill up' the finish as well. Very yeasty-Belgian and very hop bitter at the same time, this is indeed very much a 'bitter blond', but do not expect the aromatic colours and focused character of an IPA: this is very thoroughly Belgian, no matter how hop bitter. De Ranke's all-time classic XX Bitter or the perhaps less familiar Reninge Bitter Blond are not far away here. Works for me, though it took me a few moments to get used to.

Gott

28 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, 77ships & tderoeck! Clear golden-orange, lasting, very thin, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of lemon peel, vinegar, lactic acid, yoghurt, soap, unripe apple & apricot. Taste is medium to heavy funky sour, very lemony, some lactic acid & vinegar, sweetish tones of apple & apricot, a bit grassy bitter & soapy, ending dry, tart, very lemony again, with faint grassy hops. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Just a tad too much lemon but enjoyable Sour anyway.

Huge off-white head, creamy, stable, over copper to cola coloured beer. Sweetish-sourish nose, fruity, bit of molasses' syrup, lactic acid. Sour-lactic, brown sugar syrup, fruity esters, sour milk, bit of lemon. Quite estery; wood in the aftertaste. Acidthinning, bit slick, dry finish, good carbonation. Quite tasty oud bruin, much more complex than the above wording might suggest.
