On tap at Ibaraki Bakuon. T.Y. Harbor IPA 6% a cloudy orange born pour with a thick beige head. The nose is fruity with a green hop pellet character to it. The taste is a green bitter hop freshness with a decent maltiness. Pretty good.

Hazy golden color with frothy white head. The nose has a touch of funk, hoppy with noticable wheat. Medium body that is fairly dry, smooth, hoppy with sufficient funk and cracked pepper. Well balanced and much better than most american counterparts for the style. Very refreshing. Based on past reviews I would guess this year’s version has been tweaked and its quit nice. Worth revisiting for those that previously rated, IMO

On tap at the Toyama Fest. ブラックバーレイワイン On tap at the Toyama fest. A deep brown brown with a light brown head. The nose is full on malty sweet chocolate and umami savouriness. The taste is great roasty chocolate, light malt barleywine notes but it seems much more like a kick ass imperial stout.

Tap at Kamikaze. Amber-bornw-orange with a fine head. Dank mosaic nose, grassy. Sweet caramel flavor, Mosaic, a bit syrupy and too much caramel. Mosaic aspect is ok, but they really don’t take advantage of it enough.

Tap into a shaker showing pitch black with a finger of latte colored foam on top. The nose shows clean and simple coffee with moderate intensity. The stout is full bodied, highly carbonated, good strong coffee notes throughout with a high black coffee tartness throughout. A hop and black coffee bitterness dominates the back end with slight steel notes, adzuki bean sweetness on the finish. Overall, a solid stout but nothing to be running to back to.

Tap showing dark honey, finger of very quickly clean dissipating foam, moderate filtration so still quite a bit of translucency. The nose shows next to nothing. The palate is medium bodied, foamy, light and easy, very light malt sweetness throughout with some grassy notes here and there, finishes off with a sharp bitterness.

Tap into a shaker showing moderate filtration with dark honey/amber tones and a finger of clean quickly dissipating foam. Highly opaque Some steel tanks but barely any aroma at all. The palate shows some of the same steel tank notes with moderate notes of mango and guava, very good support, full bodied with distinct IPA bitterness at finish. If anything, it’s a standard IPA with a very subdued nose.

On tap at Smokehouse. Nozy coffee beans used in the recipe. Big roasted coffee aromas with a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. Medium body with creamy mouthfeel. Taste is more of the same with some coffee bitterness coming through on the palate. Nice smooth finish. Solid porter.

On tap at Smokehouse. Black brown color with a tan head. Chocolate, roasted coffee, toasted malts on the nose. Thin body with fizzy carbonation. Fairly bitter on the palate with a bit of sweetness coming through. Only 7% but booziness becomes apparent as it comes to room temperature. Bitter, burned finish...leaning towards astringent.
