‘Session’ IPA by a beer company in the southern Netherlands I had never heard of, until I encountered them at Bierproeverij Nieuw-Namen. Hopped with Target, Tettnang, Fuggles and Cascade. Loose, bubbly, snow white, coarse and quickly opening, not very stable head, hazy warm orange-tinged golden robe. Expressive aroma of fresh orange juice, ripe mango, lychee, kiwi, mandarin peel, dough, melon, caramel candy. Sweet onset, mango, orange and lychee impressions, soft carbonation, thin but still slightly oily mouthfeel; bright orange and even marmalade-like aspect lingers over a slick, clean, cereally and lightly caramelly, but somewhat thinnish maltiness, returns retronasally, but adds only very mild bitterness to the finish. This lack of hop bitterness – in sharp contrast with the relative abundance of New World, tropical fruity and citrusy aromas (no doubt the work of the Cascade) – combined with the lack in carbonation, makes for a rather thin, bit watery beer. The perfumey aroma does make up for a lot, though. As for the intended style: I don’t think an ABV of 5.5% makes this qualify as a ‘session IPA’ in spite of what the brewer claims…
