Taster at GABS Auckland 2017. Pours gold. Capsicum, ginger, pepper, lime, floral, mint, little heat. Lots of flavours going on, and perhaps I would have tried to balance them differently, but it’s a fun idea and very nice.

Bottle. Black with a coat of tan head. Aroma of brioche dough, mocha, a little overt alcohol. Oily, getting towards syrupy. Low carbonation. Much more grunt than suggested by the aroma: the fudgy mocha and dough re there but there’s much firmer roasted flavours and higher bitterness. And more than a little booze. At first there’s more chocolate than coffee, but the coffee comes through and is a little astringent at the end (which is also drying, bitter and boozy). Good but far too boozy for 10%.

[6/16] Bottle, 10C. Slightly hazy very pale gold with a fine, lasting white head. 3+ Lovely delicate yet focused aroma is floral with gooseberry, lime, honeydew melon, hay, barely ripe peach. Lightish bodied, lowish carbonation. Some hay, lots of fruit - just ripe peach, lime, some tropical notes. Dryish finish is moderately bitter and slightly peppery. Very nice.[5/17] 2017 version. Doesn’t mention the hop variety on the bottle. Similar but perhaps more pungent than last year with melon, grapes, makrut lime, nectarines.

Bottle. Gold with a white head. Cheery aroma of mandarins, tinned peaches, dough. Sweet and fruity with a more bitter finish than you might expect. Quenching.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma has light fruitiness, hints of caramel, dash of fruity hop on the palate...prob too fruity but a nice basic ale.

Four smoked malts - beech, cherry, mesquite, peat.
Hazy and pale tan. Thin head. Holy smokes that’s a badass smoke nose. Rich, rich sugary and with layered smoke, like the best barbeque, so much complexity and meaty umami. I may be a smoke whore but this hits all the right notes.

Light tan, quite hazy, bubbly head. Aroma of crystal malt, and melony, grapefruity hop. Tastes is about the same. I like the bright hoppiness.

Tap at the brewery. No hops. Golden. Dusty, yeasty aroma. Sweet, a bit sticky. Fairly herbal, and the herbs aren’t bright, which is a bit of an issue.
