Description
The first real malting statute was confirmed by the municipal council of Iglau, as the town of Jihlava was called till 1948, in 1579. In 1859, all 123 owners of brewing rights in the town and surrounding villages joined in a new brewery, the present Jihlava Brewery. The brewery in Jihlava was opened in 1861, but the brewery considers the year 1860 as the year of its incorporation. From its incorporation the brewery had mainly German owners. After WWII it was nationalised and then privatised in 1995. In 2008 the almost bankrupt brewery was bought by the Pivovary Lobkowicz group. Under the new owners the brewery returned to the production of beer according to old original recipes.

Tap at my university’s students’ club. This afaik replaced Pilsner Urquell on tap. I’ve heard from someone that it was really Urquell in Jihlava kegs, but I seriously doubt it now because the kegs had the importers’ stickers that clearly said that this was the 4.7% Ježek. This poured a nice yellow-golden colour with a medium sized thick creamy white head, very lively carbonation. A nice malty nose, with nice herbal-lemony hopiness. The taste was remarkably pleasant. A superb honey-fruity maltiness, with some pleasant background herbal hopiness that mixed with the maltiness nicely. A bit salty, and a weak weak touch of metal, but all in all, a very, very good pils. If this was really Pilsner Urquell, this was the oddest (and the best) one I’ve ever had (if it was, I’m rerating it with this review here). Anyway, deserves the high score.

Bottled at Mosebacke, Stockholm (as Jezek Premium Pils, 5.1%). Clear golden, fairly small head. Vague hay-like hop aroma. Dryish with clean mouthfeel and rather slim body. Reasonably well hopped with long salty bitter finish. Decent, but a bit lifeless.

Bottled at Mosebacke, Stockholm (as Jezek Dark Lager). Clear dark brown, minimal head. Sweet and medium bodied. Lightly roasty with some saccharine. Very low hop rate, no bitterness. Some light salt finishes it off.

Bottle, 5.1%. The name is right, so must be a change in alcohol level. Bought in Germany. Refreshing, slightly acidic aroma. Golden colour, small white head. The flavour is quite malty, a little sweet. Beginning breadiness, but not a problem (not past BB date). Medium bitterness and a little aroma hops. OK pils.

Bottle: Deep golden coloured, medium-sized white, slowly diminishing and sticking to the glass; delicate nose: sweet, honeyish malt ant faint hops; mild bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied; slightly warming, sweet pale-malty finish with some aromatic hops in the very end. O.K............

Bottled(660ml). –Bought this one in Ipercoop, Trieste. Pale golden coloured, small white airy head, skunky nose. Very watery with slight grassy aroma and strong bitterness. Totally unnecessary product.

Green 0.66l bottle brought from Italy by and shared with ozujsko (thanks!) A big, oily , cheap... aroma... spread through my room as this was opened. Some tiny hints of honey don’t do much to redeem it. Pale yellow/golden colour, medium sized head that went away fast. The taste is not unlike a nonalcoholic beer... watery, same harsh irritating bitterness some of those have, that doesn’t come from hops, oiliness, empty aftertaste. There is some hop thaste though... very weak. Hm. Worthless.... and the fact that it tries to mimic Budvar is even worse.

0.5l bottle shared with and courtesy of ozujsko (thanks!) Ha, another Hungarian supermarket beer (so, ok, this one is from Czech republic). This poured a golden colour with a medium white fluffy head that went away at a medium pace leaving lots of lacing. Nothing special. The nose is weak, some weak acidity and maaaybe malt if I stretch my imagination a bit. The taste is... oh dear... not again ! Watery, featureless, acidic lemoniness... now when did I drink that last time... oh, right, 5 minutes before, only it was called Jägerbrau. Blagh. At least this had some weak hints of fruit maybe (or maybe I imagined that). So, if that was citric acid dissolved in water, this is citric water dissolved in water that someone added some Nestea Lemon to. Gah. No aftertaste (why did I expect any..). Not offensive, but...
