About
The Ægir Brewery was established by Aud Melås and Evan Lewis. The brewery was named after the god of the seas, Ægir, from the Norse Mythology. He was according to Odin the best brewer in the world.
Ægir Brewery was one of the first craft beer breweries in Norway – and definitely has the most distinctive brewpub. Inspired by Ægir´s mythological hall under the sea, the brewpub is built to give the feel of a Viking style longhouse. You have to go at least a thousand years back in time to find an atmosphere like this; open fire, dragon carvings and a stave church roof that wasn´t built in a day.
Since the start Ægir Brewery has continued to grow and in 2012 expanded with a brand-new production facility that today boasts a capacity of a million litres per year.
The export marked became very important for the brewery and made up an increasingly large part of the yearly volume. At some point Ægir Brewery was exporting to twelve different countries.

The canned beer production was moved from Flåm early in June 2023 to Amundsen Bryggeri in Oslo. Only draught beers served at Flåmsbrygga will be produced locally in Flåm. The brewpub and hotel, Flåmsbrygga, was sold early in 2025. In 2025, over 40 percent less Ægir beer was sold in grocery stores than the year before. From June 2026 Amundsen takes over the Ægir brand and all beer production.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned, ABV is 6.5%. Deep golden colour to orange colour, big and lasting off-white head with an orangey hue. Nice aroma of American hops. The flavour has notes of orange marmalade and resin with a substantial hoppy bitterness, but it is not overdone. Medium sweetness. Grapefruity bitter and long aftertaste - and yngwie is right: there is actually a hint of camphor too!

500 ml bottle, many thanks to Ole_R. ABV is 4.7%. Golden colour, big and lasting head. Fruity aroma, notes of blackcurrants, some notes of malts and hay too. The flavour is biscuity and fairly dry, with noticeable fruity hops. Nicely balanced, quite enjoyable.

Biggish brown coarseish head does not last. Opaque dark brown body with a lot of yeast in it. Burnt coffee aroma with wheaty (or yeasty?) muddy chocolate notes and faint vinegar. Sweetish burnt chocolate taste with minty coffee notes. Soft, wheaty (or yeasty?) acidic notes. Aftertaste is the same, with peppery earthy notes. Very nice porter, and certainly impressive for the amout of alcohol. (0.5l bottle, Fenaknoken, Oslo. Rating adjusted later.)

Bottle. It pours a slightly hazy, yellowish golden body with a nice off-white head. Pale malt, a little grainy note and a little hint of cooked vegetables, as well as fruityness in the aroma. The flavor is malty and fruity as well, with some grainy notes, and canned tropical fruits. Quite sweetish, with a decent bitterness. Medium body. Grainy and fruity finish. It’s a quite nice beer, takes some time, but it gets better after a few sips. Would like it to have more power though, fuller and at 5.5-6% ABV would probably do much good to it. Rating: 5-4-6-3-12-3.0. 080410

On tap at Haandverkerstuene. It pours an almost clear, orange-golden body under a diminishing, creamy, off-white head. It’s quite grainy on the nose, in a nice way that is, with fruityness. The flavor has a little flowery touch, else it’s grainy and fruity, and a bit low on bitterness. Some bitterness in the finish. Medium body, smooth and a bit high on co2 levels. A quenching on, very quenching, but a bit low on flavor. 100312

Big offwhite head. Reddish amber body with carbonation. Sugary earthy peas aroma with fruity notes. Vivid and harmonic. Dry-sweet earthy dusty peas taste with fruity musty notes. Light body. MIld, dusty mouthfeel with lingering astringency. Dry dusty citric peas aftertaste with earthy notes. Nice, but a bit watery for all that flavour. (0.5l bottle, Centra, Oslo. Rated it twice; same score both times.)

Small white head. Deep yellow body. Fruity chalky citric aroma. Fruity sweetish chalky grainy taste with grassy hop notes. Dry citric grassy hop finish. Nice, gentle, drinkable, but perhaps not terribly exciting. Could do with some more flavour. (0.5l bottle from KnutAlbert.)

500ml bottle. Re-rated as a fresher version of Vårsol.
Unclear golden body with a nice, foamy off-white head. Quite mid in aroma, with pale malt, some fruit and a floral hint. Mild flavor as well, pale malt, light fruit and not much bitterness. Medium body and short in aftertaste. A rather light one, but feels refreshing and thirst quenching a hot spring day.

Old rating:
Almost clear orange body with a big off-white head. Not to strong, spicy grain aroma that’s a bit spoilt with a little hint of cooked vegetables. Flavor is sweet fruity, refreshing and gentle malty, a bit like hermetic peaches and bread with a bitter touch. Medium body. Quite nice, but I’m afraid Ægir is about to be a bit trapped in the terrible Norwegian 4,7 ABV rule. This beer would do better with more punch. Thanks to Ole_R.

Two 500ml bottles from the fine food store Fenaknoken in Oslo. Pours a murky brown body under a brownish head, quickly disappearing completely. Aromatic sweet dark malts with a light nose of liquorice. Roasted grain leads the way towards a chocolate flavour with coffee bitterness behind. Satisfying mouthfeel, bit without longevity (11.04 and 19.04.2008).
