Draught at Craft Beer Bar, Yokohama. Clear deep golden, rich firm head. Sweaty hops shine in a fruity nose. Outspokenly dry with clean, yet deep mouthfeel. Grassy hops xover the well developed malt. Fruity wih baanced salty bitterness. Pleasant and quaffable.

Tap at Q-Brick. Fruity malt aroma with peaches, oranges, and honey. Rich malt flavor, with the same fruits as in the nose. Hoppy, with a rather bitter finish. Nice contrast between hops and fruits; good balance. Pleasant and flavorful, but nothing at all like a traditional maibock. Tastes like a strong blonde ale.

2009 version. Draught at Beer Cafe Barley. Cloudy, muddy, brown color. Very unattractive. Aroma of caramel, earth, and some fruit with a bit of hops. Caramel, gumball flavor, with decent hopping. A bit earthy and fruity. Nice balance, and reasonably complex. Very drinkable, with a decent hoppy finish. Relatively genuine. Maybe the best Japanese alt yet.

Draught at Wachi. Deep, glowing bronze / amber color. Thin, lacy head. Light, slightly caramel aroma. Medium rich Vienna malt flavor, with caramel. Reasonably good, but too light and could use more flavor. Very drinkable, though.

Tap at Qbrick, March 19, 2009. Looks and tastes like a zwicklbier to me. Cloudy orange color. Very bitter hops, with a yeasty richness. Long, bitter finish. Some citrus and other fruits. OK aroma hops as well. Excellent. I could drink a gallon. (This is called an Enlgish ale on the website! It is definitely not the same beer as in yester-years! It also is completely different from the bottle.)

Bottle from Yamaoka. 2008 version. Malty aroma, butter, apples, hops. Slightly sweet but not at all overly so. Super light gold color, thin looking, like a cider, low head quickly turning to lace. Sparkling and clear. Deep malt flavor, rich and thick, with bitter and honey, a touch of molasses, and apples, but not too much. Very well balanced. Hops just barely there, but they add just enough bitterness. Could be slightly less sweet. A proper lager with nice apple added, and not too much. Way better than last year’s. Nicely done fruit beer. Great mouthfeel with weight but sparkling enough to lift it up.

2008 version. Bottle from Yamaoka. Creamy wheat aroma. Tons of bananas, cloves. A touch of citrus and melon. Cloudy orange-amber color with a tall, fine head. Big wheat flavor, with banana cream, cloves, melon, alcohol. Creamy and rich, sweet but not overly so. Decent sour edge and good bitterness in the finish. Complex but well balanced. Velvety smooth and thick palate. A great winter warmer weizen.

2007 version, bottle. Orange-brown color. Very cloudy, low fine head. Aroma similar to a weizen. Malty, spicy, bananas, plus a sour note. Very interesting rye malt flavor. Weizen-like, but really different. Very fruity, with lots of bananas and some citrus. Cloves and other spices. Good hops. The best of the Japanese rye beers I have tried. Very complex. Fresh, fruity, excellent. Very much like a good medium to dark weizen, but a bit different. 2008 bottled version got exactly the same score (blind). I also had it on tap, but it was thinner and completely lacked the complexity of the bottle. I think the hefe was missing from my glass. This is great.

Bottle from Yamaoka in Kyoto. Good woody aroma with lots of chocolate, some coffee and caramel. Flavor similar, though not quite as rich as the nose. Good chocolate and coffee, plus smoke, milk. Palate is a little thin for a stout. Generally very tasty, though.

2009 version, draught at Q-Brick. Rich, sweet malts, rather fruity and somewhat ale-like. Big and smooth, but rather well balanced and much better than the bottle. 2008 version. Bottle from Yamaoka 6/3/7/3/14. Malty, cereal/bread aroma, fruity, with hops. slightly light/thin color for a fest. Very fruity, hoppy flavor. Somewhat light, but decent bready malts and not too sweet. Rather light, crisp palate. Tasty and refreshing, with nice hops and good balance, but not exactly my notion of a festbier. A bit too light.
