I picked up this bottle of Oirase Amber Lager from one of these prefecture shops I found underground not too far from Craft Beer Base Bud. These are good places to turn up beers you otherwise don’t really find in Osaka. A deep lustrous mahogany red-brown with a thick beige head that left virtually no lacing behind. The aroma is pretty good: fruity, caramel/fudge. Medium bodied with a dry finish, I feel this is a decent example of the style. At first it is sweet with rich caramel notes then it gets a bit bitter and roasty while the aftertaste gives nutty flavors. These guys seem much better than I remember them being then again they’re in bottles while the last time I had it in twist top stubby aluminium bottles.

Tap at Craft Beer Base, Osaka. Hazy yellow color, small white head. Overriped banana aroma. Medium-bodied. Banana and citrusy hoppyness. Estery weizen. Excellent summer drink.

Got a bottle of this (proper glass not the aluminium stubby) and shared it with a few guys. It was a properly done dark lager with no off flavors and I found it satisfying. And I do feel that the dark character was more prominent this time around so I’m bumping the rating up to 3.5

Bottle from the Akihabara Station Nomono, 5% a very dark brown that is black in the glass with ruby highlights & a thick beige head that dissipates quickly. Served in a pilsner glass. The aroma is rich dark malts with caramel, breadiness & light chocolate. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin & watery at first but then becomes more satisfying. The taste is a sweet graininess which gives it some breadiness, light chocolate, a bit of roast and a touch of caramel but this is quite malty in the sense it smells & tastes mostly like grains. It’s OK but I’d like the dark malt character to shine through more. 3.2

Can from Le Collier. Spicy, wheaty nose, cinnamon along with cloves, middling banana and some orange. Orange-gold, very cloudy, with a low head. Sweet, fruity flavor, grainy wheat, cake, banana cream. Nice and full. Good body. Rather tart to go with the sweetness. Bit of hop bitterness in the finish. Quite nice. Obviously much improved from when the earlier 4 ratings were done, but that’s not surprising to me because I like their other beers too.

well balanced dortmunder. Lots of toastiness. This is way too malty to be a pilsner and the color was dark golden. Nice enjoyable summer beer.

Drought at Bay Brewing Yokohama. Black with a large head. Creamy nose with roasted malt. Flavor of rich malt, chocolate, and cream, vanilla. Well balanced but somewhat non-descript. A tasty enough dunkel.

Draught at Bay Brewing Yokohama. Medium brown with lace. Grainy nose, big cereal malts, a bit of caramel and just a touch of cherry. Rich, malty flavor, fruity, with caramel and some chocolate. Great grains, some cherry and other fruits. Slightly bitter finish. A bit too fruity.

Draught at Bay Brewing Yokohama. Cloudy deep gold with a fine, low, head. Rich, malty nose with biscuits, grains, light hops, but they’re there. Nice maltiness. Rich and sweet malt, quite fruity, grainy, but light. A lot more fruity than usual, but still very nice.

Quick dissipating white head. A light brown body. Solid chocolately nose with slight sour overtones and faint hints of chocolate and nuts. Light bodied, mildly sour, chocolate coffee mouth and slightly sour malty chocolately finish. Re-rating almost six years later from a 2.7 to 3.6. Dramatically improved over this time period. lots of roasted malt nose. Mouth is malty, lots Of chocolate malt and roasty character with a touch of astringency. Very nice with good depth
