Continuing my quest to try as many breweries as possibly tonight I am drinking a can of Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Pale Ale, 5%. This can is about 2-3 weeks old. It pours a clear deep yellow gold verging on copper. A decent head of fizzy foam morphs into a nice filmy head with solid light lacing. The aroma is quite malty with a soft spicy quality to it that evokes almost a flan or caramel pudding. A very soft nose, it is a subtle caramel spicy note but pleasing. Decent med-full body with a smooth palate the taste is that same soft caramel, kind of like those caramel squares I used to get for Halloween but much more subdued, some honey, which is followed by a sharp zesty carbonated finish with a mix of lightly hoppy & malty flavors. A tasty malt forward beer, I feel it is halfway between an English Pale Ale & an American: maltier but less hoppy than most APA’s I am used to. Good enough but as you drink it & it warms up the sweetness gets a little cloying. That caramel does a have but of a buttery quality to it so I can see what KyotoLefty was getting at, in my case I felt it detract from the beer so much. Most non-beer geeks wouldn’t notice it I think,

Can from Le Collier. Malty nose, slightly burnt, caramel, toffee. Medium amber color with a fine head. Sweet and biscuit, cloying, caramel, toffee, butter. More like a sweet brown ale. Not very enjoyable.

3/4/5/3/8 Dark, dark brown with an orange glow and a lovely, frothy head. Cloudy. Aroma of dark caramel and chocolaty malts, and, wait, yes, creamed corn. Also lots of minerals. The malt does a decent job of almost covering it up, though. Rich caramel malts, dark chocolate. No noticeable hop aroma, but a bit of grassy, earthy hop flavor and something approaching balance. Less DMS noticeable in the mouth.Full palate. Their best so far, but that also means least infected. Wish they would solve the problem.

Bottle from Omicho Market in Kanazawa. Medium amber-orange color with a low, lacy head. Aroma of fresh, sweet, corn! With a bit of amber malt and grassy hops. Corn dominates—overpowering. DMS infection. Flavor of golden malts, honey, grassy, citrus hops, and a bit of sweet corn. Corn is not as noticeable now. Nice hoppy, grassy finish. Body average. Might be decent if not for this off-flavor. I wouldn’t normally add this, but it was fresh, so it’s obviously their fault.

Bright golden color with a medium, foamy head. Malty, biscuity aroma with some citrus hops and just a bit of corn. Unfortunately this too seems to have a DMS infection, though it is no where near as bad as the last one. Rice is strong in the after taste. Clean and crisp, and though it isn’t all that interesting, would be a refreshing summer ale if not for the corn. Still drinkable, though again with this one the rice adds nothing to the beer, and probably takes away if anything.
