Bottle. Thanks Davido for the brewery tick. Hint of manure, taste is ok, sweetness, malty, apple. Boozy.

Bottle as omiyage from Izu, labelled as Dogashima Beer, still pretty sure its the same beer as this entry here. Pours mahogany brown, some beige head at first but that does not stay around for long. Nose is bready and nutty, some light caramel and toffee but not too much of these two. Tastes fresh, caramel and burnt sugar there but quite well balanced with bitterness, malty character bringing out some rye bread character. Quite enjoyable actually, not a bad altbier.

Bottle I got as omiyage from Dogashima. Labelled as Dogashima Beer, Umi No Ao - but it also is saying that it's brewed at Usami Brewery, so I am quite convinced that this is one of their lineup beers, just with a different label. Label is saying "top-fermented", so I am going with kölsch. Pours nice golden yellow, clear and with some white foam on the top - that does not stay there for too long. Aroma is simple, just doe green hops, light grainy bread, maybe a touch of fruitiness but maybe not. Taste comes off as nicely refreshing, grainy base and light hop bitterness on top. Super simple beer - but as it seems to be fresh, it is not bad.

Thanks for sharing the bottle Davido! Clear, almost glowing neon straw color. Lots of apple and pear in the nose. Watery, thin body with a headache-inducing finish. This is bad.

Usami Thames Stout 5% I cracked out my stout glass for this one. It pours a deep brown with a thick beige head that alas leaves no lacing behind. The stout glass concentrates the aroma which gives me a bready cinnamon type yeastiness, sugar plums and chocolate buns. Not bad just not at all what I’d expect from a stout. Light bodied edging towards watery. The taste is sweet roasty chocolate and light spiciness. This is an odd stout, call it a Christmas beer and you’d have a winner. It grows on me but I’d like more body. Better as it warms up.

Bottle ordered from the brewery. Served in my kolsch glass at home, it impressed with it’s vivid gold and thick dense head of foam that left big soapy lacing behind. The aroma is floral then a hayloft type of graininess with subtle hits of a tangy fruitiness around the edges. I was pleasantly surprised as I wasn’t expecting all that much from this beer. Aqueously light bodied with a silky mouthfeel as the beer glides down my throat. The taste is extremely mild hop fruit notes but predominately the hops come through as herbal/spicy - light but deftly done. Sweet grainy breadiness like a dense loaf of good stuff with a semi-dry finish. Maybe after a long day I just needed a beer or something but this really hit the spot. I think they’ve stepped up their game...

Bottle from the brewery. It pours a very clear reddish-brown with minimal beige foam. The aroma is malt-forward giving you notes of caramel & dried figs/dates. Chocolate, tart caramel, a bit of smoke. Light bodied but a fairly tasty beer though I feel that sour/tart flavor doesn’t really seem appropriate for an alt. After awhile that sourness fades and I get maple/tobacco notes. Pretty good.

Bottle from the brewery, now listed as 3.5% Blond/Golden Ale so I am not sure if it deserves a new rating or not though an ABV change and a change from lager to ale may be enough... anyways on to the beer: It pours a light cloudy gold with a fizzy white quickly dissipating head of foam. The aroma is a green herbal/grassy hoppiness and a light pilsner malt character. The taste is really green hops, grassy and a flatbread breadiness from the malts. Light bodied but with an ultra-dry finish. A nice clean Japanese table beer.

On tap at the brewery. Nice rich, shiny black color. A sweetish porter, with an ok hop finish and light roasted malt character. Chocolate and coffee notes in there as well. Their best beer, I suppose.
