Very exciting nab for me. Fairly clear. Funky nose of melon, cheese and anise. Tastes of Asian pear, honey dew, licorice, some cheese funk, grapefruits, earthy, basement floor. Smooth and little sweet.

Bottle. Potato, bit of sweetness, medicinal. Not sure why they put potato in all their beers. Guess it's their USP. Think I preferred the red one.

Bottle. Initial aroma is fruity, red wine, rich and some sweet potato. Taste is fruity to start with, quite low carb. Sweet potato at the end. Quite different and quite nice, but it's quite heavy going.

Satsuma Red pours blood red with a pink head of foam. The aroma has a fruity wine like character coupled with the sugary spice component I associate with sweet potatoes. Medium bodied with a rich silky mouthfeel. The flavor is Sweet somewhat artificial seeming sweet potato, fruity, some diacetyl but it is weirdly well integrated And my big takeaway is fruity cotton candyish. It’s alright but the discontinued purple was the real winner.

Satsuma Black 4.5% Also made with sweet potato it pours a cola black with a fizzy beige head that vanished so quickly I couldn't snap a photo of it. A nice chocolate fudge aroma with a spicy cinnamonesque quality which is similar to what I picked up in the Gold which must be from the sweet potato. The dark malts seem to balance that out and prevent it from getting too sweet. It is light bodied, a bit too gassy and finishes fairly dry. The flavor isn't bad, roasty, chocolate syrup, that sweet potato odd character of starchy sugar. In this beer the sweet potato sort of works. Decent enough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from my buddy Brian shipped to me from Kagoshima. A clear bright bass color with a white head of foam. The aroma is bready malts, sweet with a spicy sugary quality I guess comes from the sweet potato. That surgary charact is a bit artificial but not terribly so. Medium to light bodied with a syrupy texture. The taste is very sugary sweet like some kind of powdered candy but you also get a more typical lager like bready malt sweetness and it finishes quite dry. It’s a weird beer, not as bad as some online reviews painted it to be but too sweet and if that is coming from the sweet potato it is definitely clashing with the other ingredients.

Bottle shared at "Tokyo Ratebeer Dark Tickers of The World Unite or AJB tasting volume 1" event. Thanks Neil! Nougat aromas with big marshmallow notes and cough medicine as it warms. Average carbonation with a medium body. Sweet with a dry and chalky finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Satsuma Gold on 05 Mar 2016 at 19:19 - Score: 1. Bottle in Kagoshima, I am disappointed this has been retired and replaced with the red. I had this years ago and really enjoyed it. It poured a bright reddish-purple with a pink tinged head. The aroma was fruity and a touch spicy with a med-thin body. The taste was lightly fruits & spice, refreshing and unique. I really liked it and this was 5+ years ago when anything with this much flavor was hard to come by in Japan.

Bottled. Lightly hazy purple, wildly gushing lively pink head. Tart aroma of lingonberry and what must be sweet potato. Mid dry with light-medium body. Fruity and buttery with some weird spices. Low bitterness. Weird.
