Description
History goes back to 1442 but it is first mentioned as a 'Brauhaus' in 1487. In the following centuries, ownership and names changed many times till 1933 when the brewery was acquired by brewer Ferdinand Wirtz and his son Cornelius Wirtz. Since then the brewhouse is owned by the Wirtz family. The brewery was destroyed during the war but afterwards the 'Brauhaus' continued its activities though the beer was brewed under contract elsewhere.

Draught at the brewpub. Golden with a medium white head. A very nice malty aroma with some decent hoppiness as well. Flavor is malty sweet, a bit bready, and the finish is hoppy and bitter with a bit of grass. Quite thick and full bodied for a Kolsch. Very good.

Bottle, thanks to DerDoppelbock (Sebastian) for trading.
Sparkling, clear body. White, creamy head. Fully diminishing head. Aroma: little bit soapy but overall quite complex with some fruitiness. Moderately bitter flavour with a tinny little bit saltiness. Quite ok.

(bottle, thanks to DerDoppelbock for the personal delivery) Slightly hazy, pale golden colour with a short foamy white head. Slightly sweet, grainy and fruity nose with a whiff of herbal hops. Light-sweet grainy taste with a dense lemon-fruity background, slim bodied, dry and quite short, light-bitter finish with herbal hoppy notes. Decent Kölsch.

First rating(Draught 20 cl from a wooden keg, at Zur Schreckenskammer, Köln) Clear light golden color, white head. Fresh scent with a bit of hops. Fresh taste with a bite to it. Malty, hoppy and bitter in a good mix. Very nice bitterness. Full body. Excellent Kölsch! The best one I’ve had in Köln so far (though I did try a few more after this, one of which is compeating for the best)7/4/9/4/17=4.1Rerate(50 cl bottle thanks to larsniclas!)On October 18, 2008Clear pale golden color, white head. Malty sweet scent, honey as well. Malty sweet and honey taste. Medium to thin mouthfeel. Low bitterness. Totally lacks the fresh hoppy character I remember.6/3/5/3/11=2.8I’ll leave the higher rating from the fresh stuff on site.

Cask@Schreckenskammer (love that name). Light fruity grainy aroma. Pale golden, low head. Grainy flavor at start and finish, a hint tropical fruit in the middle. Light chewy body. Light dusty bread aftertaste.

draught Very pale gold, well carbonated initially to differentiated off-white head. Malty, a bit herbal, faint lemon peel nose from the hops. Very grainy-malty, for a moment lively then falling flat. Like an English ale served from a swanneck-sparkler pump. Very light bodied, nearly watery, no carbonation in the end. This beer would clearly benefit from a little more carbonation; the C0² acid would balance it out many times better. It’s just too soft.

Frischer, leicht getreidig-malziger Antrunk. Gerste, wenig herb, angenehme Hopfung. Frisch, sehr süffig durch die feine Karbonisierung. Etwas trockener Abgang. 11/12/13/12//12
