Description
History goes back to 1442 but it is first mentioned as a 'Brauhaus' in 1487. In the following centuries, ownership and names changed many times till 1933 when the brewery was acquired by brewer Ferdinand Wirtz and his son Cornelius Wirtz. Since then the brewhouse is owned by the Wirtz family. The brewery was destroyed during the war but afterwards the 'Brauhaus' continued its activities though the beer was brewed under contract elsewhere.

50cl Fles van De Bierkoning. Helder goudgele kleur, witte kraag. Licht moutig, papier, wat citroenschil, licht bittertje, hint van honing. Lichte body. Redelijk fris, maar zoals elke echte Kölsch ook gewoon oersaai en vlak.

Bottle picked up from Köln Hbf yesterday and consumed today Monday 12th January 2026, listening to Nathan Shepherd and Deb Grant with New Music Fix on 6 Music, I had Nidi di Tagliatelle al Forno for tea tonight (Baked Pasta Nests) we had more snow today so up to about 40-45cms now. Pours clear gold, light/mid gold, white head. Subtle nose, there is a touch of bread, a little malt, these are replicated in the mouth, light bitterness. Pretty good, touch sweeter perhaps but I enjoyed it. Score 7.3

Bottle picked up in Cologne as I wasn’t going to get this on tap. Overall this is pretty herbal and a little grassy, verging on vegetal, but not to any detriment. At the sweeter end of the spectrum although there’s some grassy bitterness. Drinks well. Nice body. Notably this is 5% as opposed to the usual 4.8. Good gear and a nice tick.

From the German grocery shop of Tanta Emmen. A good and simple kölsch, perfect for the palate, malty, fruity, a bit herbal, a bit bit smooth, bready with a final of bitterness, 01.09.21, at my hotel room, Mercure gare de Lyon.

Pours clear, medium colored golden blonde. Medium latge white head, fading fairly fast. Scent is crunchy, fresh malts, bready, whiff of coockies. Fairly silent on the yeast. Taste is surprisingly bitter, crispy maltyness, fullbodied aftertaste, malty (bready). Silent on hoparoma, but prominent bitterness. Very balanced, fresh, and tasty.
