Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.
In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.
A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.
So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.
The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

12oz can from HalfTime. Golden pour with thick fluffy head, looks good so far. Aroma is apples and white wine (?), very sweet. Taste brings in notes of sourdough, then reverts to the heavy apple flavors as indicated by the aroma, plum notes too. Can dates do not indicate it being past date. Except for the appearance, there is not much Tripel here.

[as Green's Gold Dry-Hopped Lager] Bottiglia.

One of the Green's beers from Manchester which are gluten free due to the fact that they are not brewed with barley or wheat, but with - in this case at least - millet, sorghum, buckwheat and (brown) rice, a combination of grains I never saw before, and never without barley except for that one sorghum beer a friend brought me back straight from Africa... Talking about 'specialty grain' indeed, it is very rare to find a beer without barley, and even rarer to find one without either barley or wheat. Can shared by Meeki, as "Green's Gluten Free Dubbel Ale" but apparently the same as this entry - I guess name and label were updated some time ago. Loose, open, pale beige, bubbly head, very unstable (of course), over a clear caramel brown robe with bronze tinge. Aroma of caramel, fig, blonde raisins, ground hazelnuts, clove, orange peel, brown-sugared millet porridge, indeed cooked rice. Sweet onset (candi sugar) with dim sourish edge from those grains, very clean and very sleek, with softish fizz and fruity notes of fig and red apple but generally clean; brown rice and millet flake porridge sweetishness and graininess in the middle but lacking depth and body, which is not surprising. Orange-zesty hop touch in the end along with lingering red apple fruitiness; the whole remains very slick and a bit glueish and due to the lack of proteins otherwise provided by the more classical grains, the alcohol is more noticeable as well, with even a wry effect which could also be related to the buckwheat for all I know. Weird, but actually not that unpleasant, if lacking body and complexity for a dubbel; clearly this cannot beat a 'true' dubbel, but it must be said that achieving this without barley or wheat is a technical gimmick I have never seen any other brewery pull off. Have a point for that alone.

Bottled. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is some raisins, mild bready and earthy tones with some herbs. Flavour is herbal, some floral, raisins, rather sweet and some mild dried fruity tones too.
