Description
The future of beer lies in the past.
Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.
In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.
A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.
So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.
The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

The label says dubbel and I take the brewers at their word. Dubbel is one of my favorite styles. Without gluten? We'll see how that effects things. This 500 ml bottle was acquired at Susan's in Santa Fe a couple of weeks ago. I have my Cowtown snifter in place for the tasting so here it goes. The pour is a medium cola brown with a decent head of light tan foam. I lift for a smell to determine some dark fruit and toffee, not a bad beginning. A drink now, a bit peculiar. Different than any other dubbel I have had, maybe specialty grain is the better choice for style. Some astringency, a light touch of raisins, malt a small fruit sweetness and an unusual tartness. Far from what I hoped for.

Bottle from somewhere: bubbly gold with fizzy white head. Apple juice aroma. Sweet apple juice taste. This is like a shoddy high boost golden ale. I did not get a tripel feel from it.

33cl bottle as “Green's Gluten free Glorious Pilsner Brew 2” from Nicolas Nice wine shop in Nice, France. Medium, white, quick gone head. Colour is pale gold, clear. Aroma is light malty, bready, bit spicy, floral. Taste is medium malty base, bit grainy, decent bitterness, bit caramel, citrus touch, medium carbonation, not very for the style but not bad as GF beer.

500ml bottle picked up at the state store, BBD 3/14/23. Pours clear dark amber with a medium sized beige head, good lacing. Dark fruit, grains, toasted malts, caramel, bitter, herbal. Ok. I wouldn't want another one though.

Bottle @ RBESG Grand Tasting 2009. Brown color. Melon and dust in the aroma. Sour flavor, caramelly with melon. Drinkable, but too sweet and thin.
