Description
The future of beer lies in the past.
Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.
In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.
A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.
So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.
The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

Bottle. Amber color. Grainy aroma with apple. Watery flavor with oversweet apples. Grainy. Hint of caramel. A horrid beery fluid with a terrible price/quality index (€ 3,20 a bottle in a local Plusmarkt)

Blonde, at least it looks like beer! Sweet apples aroma. Horrid bitter walnut flavor with apple juice. Luckily the aftertaste is short.

Plastic and grass nose. Clear amber, effervescent, enormous head, decent lace. Dry, plastic, oak. Light body, harsh mouthfeel. I used to think this was decent for what it is, but g-free and NA beers have come a long way since this was introduced.

Bottle as Green's Dubbel. A dark brown beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has sweetness, of raisin, dried fruits, and hint of strawberries. Taste has dried fruits, prune, some harsh notes. Medium bodied. Quite good, nothing wrong here.

33cl bottle from Alko. As Green´s Dubbel. Poured dark brown color. Thick white head. Cola like spicy aroma, sweet dark fruits. Flavor has light spiciness, dark fruits, plums and light hops. Semisweet finish. OK dubbel actually, although not a favorite style of mine.

Off white rocky head soon left flotsam on a hazy light copper coloured, finely carbonated body. Minimal aroma of citrus & saccharin. Medium bodied, highly effervescent with cloying back. Tinned fruit juices, orange, sweet citrus & cordial tastes. Pretty poor stuff
