Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.
In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.
A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.
So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.
The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a pale golden color with a huge white head. The aroma was bready and doughy. The flavor was lightly spicy uncooked bread dough with a long and odd doughy finish.

Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a chestnut color with a large dark brown head. The flavor was roasty malts and a strange mix of root beer and Dr. Pepper. The flavor was root beer and Dr. Pepper and a hint of coffee. Very odd.

330 ml bottle. Dark red/ brown body with a foamy beige head. Aroma is malt, yeast, dry fruit and brown sugar. Flavor is a bit sour malty with cellar notes, rather thin body but quite refreshing. Long spicy finish. A lot better than Glutaner.

Bottle 0,33l. Dark brown/amber coloured. Unclear. A tanned creamy head that lasted for a while. Strong aroma of fruit and berries. A vinous.impression. Flavor in the same way with a fruity bitter finish. OK but a bit unvaried.

330 ml brown longneck bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. This is the second gluten free beer on the Norwegian market, Glutaner (a pale lager) was the first one. Green’s Endeavour is called a "Double Dark Beer". ABV is 6%. Website www. glutenfreebeers.co.uk . Green’s is a trademark of Charles Cooper Ltd. The beer has a dark reddish brown colour and a thick and creamy tan head. Distinct sweetish aroma and flavour that remind me more of cheap fortified wines than of beer. Notes of raisins and spices. Some hops in the aftertaste. No masterpiece, but drinkable even for people who are not "forced to" drink it by coeliac disease.

330ml bottle celebrating that the Hammers still have a premiership status! This double dark beer pours a deep mahogany red-tinged body supported by a beige, frothy head with lots of bubbles (I’m forever blowing bubbles in the air!) and some lacing. Sweet rummy aroma. Rich taste of dark berries and fruits (plums and prunes) - almost vinous. A spicy touch towards the end. Perhaps a bit too sweet and one-dimensional. Medium bodied and easy to drink (13.05.2007).

Bottle. Clear, chestnut body with a nice, dense beige head leaving lacings. Quite a lot of dried fruits almost hides the aromas of candisugar and roastiness. The flavor on the other hand isn’t that good, not bad though, especially considering that it is gluten free, as there’s a bitterness that doesn’t match the dried fruits and sugars, and a vinous hint. There’s a slight note of alcohol as well, becoming more pronounced in the finish. Quite full-bodied and leaving a sticky feeling in the mouth. Some sparkling feeling as well. I think I have found a favourite for the day hopefully not coming, when I have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance. (070508)

An unclear brown beer with a huge bubbly lazing head. The aroma is sweet herbal. While the flavor is very sweet with a slight artificial touch as well as light notes of caramel. The end is dry, but yet sticky. I rather have a gluten beer ;-)
