Green-hopped saison by Sweynbeer south of Mechelen, 75 cl bottle from Delhaize Zwijnaarde shared with Joeri. Very thick, papery lacing, egg-white, foamy, stable head, hazy apricot blonde robe with beige-ish hue, turning rather murky with sediment in the end. Aroma of sawdust and dried out old bread, old crackers, dry hay, old cheese rind, dried flowers, unripe pear, pumice, minerals, some vague chlorine when warming up. Crisp onset, dryish from the start, hints of dried apricot, unripe pear and very light banana, medium carb; dry middle, nicely bready malts with a grainy edge, under strong phenolic 'activity' (clove and even that chlorine hint returning); yeasty breadiness fills the finish together with a 'wet', leafy, peppery, earthy hop bitterness with retronasal effects of damp tree leaves and dried field flowers, nicely bittering indeed - but also feeling rather 'dusty' and old, so I guess this bottle was already past its prime at the time of opening. Must have been better when it was still young, because in its basic make-up (dry, bready, spicy, effervescent, minerally) it does qualify as a decent saison to me. Too bad I did not encounter this one when it was fresher...
